What should I be looking for in getting a logo design done in terms of file format with future proof ability to use the logo on marketing material like business cards & other things ?

Also how is Fiverr for logo designers ? Or should I be looking for a more corporate company if I want something professional ? And what kind of package should I be looking to get (I guess it ties in with first question?)

I'm no expert on this, but in my past experience, logos should be provided to you in vector format so that it can be displayed/printed at any size. EPS, SVG or even PDF formats will work for this, but I prefer the first two for ease of use. The logo should be provided to you so that it can work on any background colour. Exactly how that works depends on the logo itself, ie transparent background, or bounding box etc.
