Well, if you're determined for the RR, for me, this would be one I'd be looking at and 100% not the diesel... 82k miles, only 2 owners which is good... it's nice and fast... being a proper engine and all... luxury inside like you wanted, looks expensive... surely this is what you would want judging by your original post? Ok, MOT says a few problems, but you can check it out, haggle and ensure that's it's not a dud... but it's ticking boxes you wanted surely?

It’s your money, but personally I’d wait and see if a cheaper SC one comes up, or pay the extra. As you can see from the comments on this thread, I’m more open to running cars like this than most people, but even I would think twice about buying a diesel model.

Just out of curiosity, what are we saying is the issue with the TDV8? I appreciate your feedback and comments. But, it appears other people just say, it's a money pit or the TDV8 isnt a choice they'd make... With no facts backing up said statement. My uncles, boss', plumber had one and it was really unreliable.

Turbo failure, injector issues, EGR issues. Turbos alone are a 20hr job IIRC and seem to be a pretty common failure. I’ve heard of head gasket issues as well but I’m not sure how common those actually are.

Compare that to the 4.2 SC engine which I’ve put easily 100k on over 3 different cars with no issues whatsoever. My dad also has a Jag with that engine, no issues there either. It’s simply not as complex an engine as the TDV8.

@Transform_IT I appreciate your post wasn't asking whether your car choice was a good idea, but when the overwhelming majority of responses from car enthusiasts (presumably) say don't get this car, it would be foolish not to take heed of the advice given.

Look at the state of that.

Is it too much to ask for someone to just own a "nice older car" these days without thinking they know better than the original designers? That one looks like it has been randomly attacked by the owner and his can of gloss black Halfords paint.
And that's what we're trying to show, you can't really get a luxuary car that will be low mileage, mint condition, looks ace and will look great on thwe drive for £6k (especially a Range Rover which is what this is all about really)... what you're seeing there is the lowest level of luxury unfortunatly, hence the overwhelming response of, probably not a good idea. But if the OP is deffo going that way this is the kind of 4x4 he'll be looking at imho. A saloon will be a better choice really, Jags, Mercs and BMW's and Lexus seems to be where the money should go...

For me, it's why I didn't try and buy a 6k luxury car, because it's borderline impossible, it may look like you can but nahhhh for me, you up your budget OR you downgrade your expection. My main things when I buy a car are:

1). Do I really want that car and I'm not buying it purely to show off i.e. it's what I WANT.
2). Mint body work is essential and invariably that comes with low mileage so these two are usually linked unless it's been someones pride and joy, but I've learnt lessons of higher mileage cars now.
3). Don't go to the bottom of the price bracket for that particular car i.e. I was looking at Bentely Continentals... and that would mean sacrifices... on a Bentley... I mean... I had to slap myself in the face
4). Know exactly what the reliability of that particular car is like, what are it's pitfalls and how much as those pitfalls. Think of Tax, Insurance and running costs and ensure you're fine with that.
5). Engine bay and tyres. Sound stupid, but does it look clean and maintained or a dust fest in the engine? Has someone bothered to keep it clean or if it's dusty as hell means it's never opened? Are the tyres cheap? If so I walk away, simple as that, as it's been maintained by A). Someone who is retarded or B). Someone who can't afford decent tyres. Same outcome, early death.

They're my kinda of questions, hence, I'd be lowering expectations for a £6k Luxury car. Luxuary cars are generally around the £60k mark, dependant on your meaning on luxuary and that invariably brings Luxury maintenance costs :(

I still think personally the Jag XF would be as good as I'd be expecting in this price bracket... I mean it's a Jag, all the bits... for less than the price of a Ford KA!

Probably. My MX5 went back in mileage one year on the MOT certificates but I didn't notice until over a year later :o

I think they must type with their knuckles to stop getting oil and muck all over the keyboard

Actually, an amusing anecdote in relation to my spray paint comment above - maybe it's not just old cars.

I was out walking my dog last summer, when I passed a house with a white 20-plate Range Rover Evoque on the drive. The owner of said car was in the middle of spray-painting some of the fake wing grilles black, from silver.

I laughed to myself, and then wondered what their leasing/PCP provider will think when they inevitably hand it back. :D

Even a blind man with a walking stick would think twice about buying that, what a total and utter pile.
