My mums just bought a macbook g4 from ebay. All she wanted to do is browse the web and such. Having a few problems putting bits of software on, its saying osx is not most recent now i have no idea how macs os works do i need to just update this one or is it a case of buying the most recent osx.

try updating your version of osx via the update software section in the preferences pane.
It could also be the software you are installing, it may need osx leopard?

There's no such thing as a G4 MacBook.
Likely either a PowerBook G4 (Aluminum) or an iBook (while plastic). Dependent on model/age it will run Tiger (10.4), and perhaps Leopard (10.5) when filled with RAM.
More Info would be helpful like the model identifier from System Profiler.
