I have been looking into getting an ssd, this is my first mac.

Was going to get vertex 2 but have read problems about sleep etc...
search lead me to an intel 320 now... I am sure if I search I can find issues with those as well..

Not being in the loop, is there an ssd that is widely known to be perfectly fine in macs. With regards to performance, I am coming from a 5400 rpm sata drive so just about anything is going to be great.

I'm using the X-25M and haven't had any issues. I think in general any SATAII (3Gbps) drive that doesn't use a Sandforce controller should be fine, so the 320 is a good choice.
