Make your own stock if you're currently using stock cubes, trust me it tastes much nicer to have it fresh and home made rather than crumbling a cube into water
Something that I think goes really well is some peppercorn, either black or Szechwan. Peppercorns are commonly used in very similar foods in China and it adds a nice taste and not overpowering spicy tang to it.
