Mildly interesting, PSP's UMD format is unsuprisingly not a success for films

There is a slight problem with that in america that is illegal.
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (1998) made it a federal offense to sell or distribute software to rip dvd's.
One of the big reasons itunes doesnt do it. And ripping dvd's is a taboo subject on these here forums, also making it dubious as to the legality of that in the UK. Although these forums dont like talk of it, the official PSP ones do lol

Isn't that copyright act American tho? They seem to slowly be passing more and more laws to make it 'harder' to pirate things. Or otherwise known, slowly removing people's rights.

The DMCA made it illegal to do it without the copyright holders consent. (The 2003 copyright law here based on the EU rules does exactly the same btw, so it's technically illegal here too).

However, if it was a sony supplied solution for copying sony dvd's to sony memory sticks, none of that would apply, as it would all be being done with the copyright holder's consent.

It could even be done while still maintianing copyright control using a similar system to the one microsoft developed for personal music players that's built into WMP.

The underground is ram packed with UMD movies of every kind for PSP, if you were willing to break the law theres a huge and versatile use for a PSP. Alas legally it'll never work. I mean imagine minidiscs if no one ever illegally copied or recorded music to them, what use would they have been?

Not that i would ever condone such activities....your honour.
