Hi, I'm a student on a budget so intend to buy a quad core second hand but I'd still like to overclock it.

Can someone tell me when to look for in a motherboard to be able to overclock a CPU well, or make any reccomendations of motherboard?

Thanks,

If you are buying second hand, then have a look for a P35 or P45 motherboard.

If you want new, which makes sense as you get warranty and motherboard are much more likely to fail than CPUs, I would look at P43 and P45 boards. The X48 boards are good, but most require more expensive DDR3 RAM.

I have used this specific board with a Q6700 recently and it is pleasure to use and very easy to overclock with.

Can't recommend the asus board enough tbh...got one delivered and dropped in a q9550 into it over the weekend......set fsb to 450 for the easiest 3.8 overclock of my life lol. Mem is giel 6400 too so thats doing well at 450 to be fair..was prepared to order some pc8500 but prolly dont need to, unless I want to push this chip some more i suppose.

Anyway my point is these p45 pro turbo boards seem winners.

From my experience, i would recommend the Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G. I'm currently using it with a wolfdale E6300 clocked at 3.7GHz from 2.8 at stock volts. Also it only costs £60 from OcUK, maybe cheaper if you look around. If you don't want RAID or crossfire, Its the perfect board.
