msi b450m pro m2 max

hey thanks for the site

I'm pairing a msi b450m pro m2 max with a ryzen 3 3200g in a coolermaster N200 with no dedicated graphics for now.

I'm not an overclocker or a builder so I have questions.

the 4pin cpu connector and lack of vrm heat sinks make this board less than ideal for overclocking but am i correct in thinking a slight oc is still safe with this set up?

I'm using the stock wraith cooler and 2 case fans for now.

I'm hoping the ryzen 3 3200 g is a good candidate because of its 65w tdp.

*turns out i was looking at an older version of the board and the cpu pin is actually 8 and it might now have voltage offset so that will help with any precision boost overdrive overclocking

I wouldn't bother with OC'ing your CPU to be honest, you'll get more out of tweaking your RAM.

I can't see what you could possibly be doing with a 3200G that would necessitate an overclock anyway.

I'm a bit surprised by this reply but tbph i can read between the lines just fine.

I'll suggest an analogy because I'm bored.

it's like aproaching a group of mountain climbers and asking them if a small day pack and sturdy shoes are enough to hike a small hill.

the climbers survey the low brow shoes and surmise the attempt is futile. "why even bother" they respond.

in end the young enthusiast will make due with his meager attire. thanks to advice from places like:

Just bear in mind that the 3200G is a Zen+ based processor, Not Zen2.
You'll be better off with a guide that overclocks a 2700X, for example.

I think the best bet with those was enable PBO in the bios and max out each of the parameters. And tweak the LLC settings.

If you're doing it for fun that's fine, but there's not a lot of performance to be had in modern Ryzen chips from overclocking them. I would have told you the same thing if you were pairing a 3700X with an X570 motherboard.

As I mentioned earlier, you gain a lot more from tweaking your RAM.

Buildzoid is sometimes a bit difficult to follow but always worth watching - repetitively for folks like me.

The LLC capabilities of this board were a nice surprise.

Thanks again for the 2700x oc recommendations.

I'll admit this was this was a bit of cheek but I couldn't resist the analogy.

From what I understand the ryzen 3 3200g base clock can go from 3.6 to 3.9 or even 4.0 fairly safely.

Again only from what I understand, the Vega 8 has a base clock of 1100 mhz and can approach 1600 mhz. I would be more than happy with anything near 1400.

These numbers seem attractive to me and if my board can make it happen without degrading anything then I feel the journey will be worthwhile.

I'm aware of the benefits of high speed ram with the new ryzen CPUs.I unfortunately got sucked into some hynix gskill 3200 so we'll see how that goes.I can only hope for the best at this point.

For VRM cooling, you can put a fan over the VRM area. It may not look pretty but it will get the job done

When I upgrade to 6 or 8 cores I might need more options but if I keep the TDP under 100? I have confidence in this little board.

Package power will easily go over 100 watts when you start overclocking with 6 or 8 core CPU but s long as the VRMs get a decent airflow and temperatures in safe limits, you can get decent OC results.
