That is a long walk! The photos look amazing, I'd love to do something like this one day.

Definitely take a camera, you'll want to look back and remember this in the future!

I'm back! And I didn't get eaten by bears or fall off any mountains! :D

It was amazing, but also physically and mentally the toughest thing I have ever done! I lost 41lbs despite eating as much as I could physically carry. There are loads of photos and videos to follow, but it will take a little while to sort though them, especially as we are in the process of finding a new home etc. :)

Ladies and gentlemen! I introduce to you, the epic masterpiece that is.... Blackbeard & Destroyer's 2012 Thru Hike... The Movie! Has taken me a while to put it together. But please, pour a beer, pull up a chair, sit back and drift off to the trail!

:D

Will watch that this week, looking forward to it :)

Out of interest, how did you get to upload a video that long to youtube?

Erm, I just uploaded it. :confused: I had to 'authenticate' my account, then it let me upload longer clips. Having some issues with copyright of the music, but hopefully I won't get arrested!

Skipped to the end in the hope of extreme beard action and was not disappointed :p

Oi, no skipping, and no spoilers! ;)

Hehe, so it has. Didn't realise it had been posted on there. Looks like it has been copied and linked all over the place now! :D

Great trip and video.

Can you post a link to your final kit/packing list? hopefully including some comments about which stuff stood up to the challenge, and what got thrown out as failed or not needed. Eg. what footwear did you take for that distance/terrain?

Also... anything you wish you'd taken, but didn't?

Cheers.

That is a copy and paste of my planning document, so contains most of the stuff we brought, carried or otherwise. Most of it worked great and as intended, but there were a few bits we changed, replaced or removed.

Firstly the things that worked great;
La Sportiva Wildcat shoes. Got through 3 pairs and instantly bought a 4th when we got home. Loved them on the trail, love them off the trail. Might not work for others but the perfect shoe for me!

Montane Terra Trousers - Super comfy, very quick drying and very tough! Stoof up to continuous wear for 6 months with very little sign of wear and tear. Am on the look out for another pair in the sales.

PHD Down jackets. Would not be without them! They were our guaranteed comfort and warmth. Pack down nice and light as well.

Goosefeet Down Socks. Our feet worked very hard. This is how we treated them. Each night we would put our down booties on and it would keep our feet warm and dry at night. Very light and very comfy!

Icebreaker Hoodies. Very comfy mid layer. We wore them most days and they look like new even now.

Things that didn't work so well;
Solar charger. They just don't work well enough to justify the weight or hassle. Ended up sending it home and relying on charing everything up ever week or two when we resupplied.

Tripod. We simply didn't have enough time to spend setting up a tripod. It got sent home not long after the start.

MSR water filter. This jammed not long into the trail and we were unable to fix it. We ended up relying on Aqua Mira chemicals, then bought a Katadyn Hiker Pro Filter which worked better but still wasn't perfect. Since coming back I have bought a Sawyer Squeeze which is much smaller and lighter, and I have high hopes for it as a number of people on the trail used it with success.

Other than that, most things worked well and survived, or did the job as long as could be expected. With hindsight, we would probably carry even less stuff and get our pack weights down even further. We recently went on a micro adventure in Northumberland and managed to get our pack weights down to half what they were in the US and still were fine. :)
