i need some software for recording off the tv as the software provided with my haupage tv card is playing up, can anyone reccomend anything

MediaPortal is pretty good provided your card is supported.
Showshifter is good but not free (and I think the company behind it is closing down so may not be around much longer).
A google search should help.

I tried most of them over the years and the best by some margin is GB-PVR (and it is free/donateware and the support is great): This is providing you have a hardware encoding card (Hauppauge 150 etc.). If you have a software encoding card then Mediaportal is good. Showshifter though is in limbo and the solution is a bit outdated now.
