We don't have the HOA type things a lot of US housing areas have.

Count your blessings! HOA's can do some good but more often than not they're a massive PITA! Insane, restrictive rules and power hungry board members with a serious attitude problem. Throw in the legal authority to levy fines and you've got a perfect storm.

Sure, they can keep the trash from painting their house neon green and tossing old washing machines in the yard, but beyond that they're just not worth the trouble.
