I’m about to pull the trigger on an X570/3900X build but I’m undecided on GPU. I had originally planned to go with a 5700XT but got talked into a 2070 Super but I’m now thinking of using a ‘placeholder’ GPU so that I can game now and pick up an NVidia 3000 series card in Q4. What are peoples thoughts? I’d like to game at 1440p from the outset if possible

1660s wouldn't lose too much value or a used Vega 56/2060.
I'd definitely get a placeholder and wait for the 3070, should be a decent jump over the 2070s.

Nvidia announcement on the 1st of September, you may not be waiting long for that 30 series. Though the "smart money" might wait until AMD launch their range too, just in case they have something epic or force nvidia to drop their prices.

Funniest thing I have read in ages. LOL Nvidia and drop prices in the same sentence :D

Don't hope for a 30 series card costing anything even close to £400 for a long time. The 3090 has a supposed leaked price of £1400, or £1500 for the FE, meaning £1800 for high end 3rd party cards. It doesn't take much to calculate backward and realise how expensive the 3080 is going to be, especially with the now famous $100 to manufacture cooler.

im not hoping for a £400 card; my budget is probably double that. My point is I don’t want to drop over 50% of my budget on a card I’ll be replacing in a couple of months. I’ll look at 1660 Super for now

B550 and save some cash . Even A520 can run 16 cores with VRM hitting 100c with workstation loads :)

Second hand gtx 1660 non super .

Also, AMD monitors or those that are G-sync enabled are a bit cheaper then G-sync module monitors etc

You only have a week to wait until the new ones come out, it may well drive down the prices of the old ones enough for you to get one. I would wait and see.

I had a similar question and got some great ideas from my thread.

I was drawn to 1650's and 1660's where 2nd hand is roughly the same or more than new, but ended up with a 2nd hand RX 580 for quite a lot less.

I'm pretty sure it'll do me fine for 6 months or more at 1440 and I'll get all or most of my money back.
