Because so far Intel say produce Atom notebooks at lets say £200, that can't do 1080p, output that to tv's or be used to watch video. They don't want their lower profit Atom doing that frankly, because they also sell tonnes of celeron type low end chips in low end laptops from £300-500 that CAN do 1080p, but they make more profit on those chips.
When you use an Ion with an Atom, you suddenly get a far more capable laptop, so people are now buying a £250-300 ion laptop to do high def content, rather than being forced to buy a £300-500 laptop with a lot of the extra profit all going to Intel, on the Ion setups, that extra profit is going to Nvidia.
So thats why Intel care, oh, also because Intel make something around 50% of all the worlds gpu output right now, all of that being intergrated and a majority of that being in laptops. Intel are the largest volume GPU player in the business.
Nvidia are dumb, they knew, flat out knew Intel didn't want them making the Ion, but they couldn't resist. The screwed intel's plans and Intel are now making a more expensive Atom to screw Nvidia back, which loses them profit and changes the market for them(intel still, but I guess Nvidia lose now too).
Theres an argument to suggest, had they not "stirred the sleeping giant" and left well enough alone, they might never have gone after them about licences. When you add up Nvidia angering Intel over Atom/netbook's, and also insisting on ridiculous licensing fee's themselves, for all Intel boards that can do SLI and also insisting on those stupid $20-30 sli chips on mobo's for it for a while aswell. Had they done neither, Intel may well have been happy to let them keep making chipsets. But all they've done to AMD, Intel, and anyone else, is continually irritate, anger and screw everyone, its not a huge surprise Intel pushed back.
