Someone got given a 465 instead of a 470 from an american retailer.
After lots of digging around, it seems that they were able to flash the 465 with the 470 bios to make it a 470.

Probably as the 465 was a sample I guess, I'd be amazed if that could actually be done

For these to actually appeal to me over the ATI cards available, it would need to be nearly £100 or so cheaper than it currently is. For what I would use it for, I cannot see one reason to buy it over a 5850, or even for 5830 for a lot less money!

These cards are horrendously priced!

Only slightly less expensive than a 470..... and even the 470 is only the performace of a 5850 with the price tag of a 5870!

I cannot see what Nvidia, are doing with their pricing.

They have got it horrendously wrong this round.

Well beaten by the 4000 series, and now well beaten by the 5000 series!

Its good though, dont get me wrong, becuase it means eventually Nvidia will have to up their game, and come out with something worth buying at a good price.

Game on!

Yikes, I was expecting about £180-200 (yes i'm out of touch, I know). I'm tied into nvidia since I'm a 3D Vision user, but crikey I'm not paying that much. I'll stick with my GTX260 core216.

Found a link to the unlocking guide (not posting here as I'll probably get a beat down for it or something! :p). Also means there's 256MB RAM sitting unused on the card! No wonder it's so ridiculously expensive! :p

It would seem that SOME cards are 470 ref design (10 RAM chips opposed to 8) and these can be unlocked, however ones with 8 RAM chips cannot. This is much like the 9600GSO 384MB to 8800GT 512MB flash that was scarcely available a while ago.

I don't get midrange cards - why buy 2 for £510 when you can have a 480GTX for £393 at the moment? One card will be cooler than 2 and have better case airflow. And if you were spending £250 on a GPU then admittedly the 4850 is good to overclock, but for £50 more you could get a 5870. The more expensive GPU will stay relevant for longer - can generally get away with 2 yearly upgrades if economy is your thing and sell it / add a second card once they fall in price after a year.

(may be biased as I just got this :p)

You can't compare to the 465.

Some midrange cards offer VFM when you have more than 1.

5770x2 gives you 5870 performance for £240

5830x2 gives you GTX480+ performance for £330

The phrase mid range is being thrown around loosely, for me a mid range card costs somewhere between £90 to £140, this is a top end card that just so happens to perform badly.

That's the point. The card probably should be priced around that level.

It's really a mid range card trying to be sold for £100+ more than what its worth.
