If you are going to overclock and won't be water cooling then I guess the 5870 will end up very close if not equal to the 480

Not according to this review. The overclocked 5870 get beaten by a fair bit by an overclocked GTX480.

Totally agree, when I purchase a card of this power its mainly for gaming use so
Real temps and real noise levels will be interesting to read ;)

The 470 is not fast enough to even consider buying. It has absolutely nothing going for it IMO.

tbh for those who want the latest features and stability nvidia can provide it's a good option as it's a big chunk cheaper than the 480. i almost went for the 470 but decided i'd go for the 480 and see what happens.
