Actually I think you are mistaking trolls for "PC enthusiasts" lol

Putting the power consumption/heat issue and high price aside, GTX480 IS faster than the 5870

Test kit: 3.2GHz Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition CPU, 6GB Corsair 1,600Mhz DDR3
Drivers: Nvidia Forceware 197.17 BETA WHQL, ATI Catalyst 10.3 WHQL
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (DX 11, Win7 64-bit)
1,920x1,200, no AA, 16xAF
GTX480: min 56fps, max 75fps
HD5870: min 52fps, max 74fps

1,920x1,200, 4xAA, 16xAF
GTX480: min 44fps, max 66fps
HD5870: min 32fps, max 58fps

Well that one result definitely swings it to a definitive nvidia victory. If only I had waited. I feel so foolish for ever doubting nvidia!

By the way, I notice a distinct lack of average FPS.

Sorry it was mistake on my part...it should had been min/average fps, not min/max fps. But to be fair, while GTX480 is faster than HD5870 at higher AA, it is also priced at £100-£120 higher. If people are paying £450 for a GTX480, they might as well go a bit further and pay another £100 for a HD5970...but that may be a bit overkill, unless the person got a 120MHz monitor or multi-monitors:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (DX 11, Win7 64-bit)
1,920x1,200, no AA, 16xAF
HD5970: min 71fps, average 116fps
GTX480: min 56fps, average 75fps
HD5870: min 52fps, average 74fps

1,920x1,200, 4xAA, 16xAF
HD5970: min 56fps, average 91fps
GTX480: min 44fps, average 66fps
HD5870: min 32fps, average 58fps

Edited as was a repeat of Marine-Rx179 's detailed figures above.

Except summary at end of review

'Overall, the GTX480 is fast but far too pricey, hot and power-hungry to be truly desirable' - Reads about right , unfortunately :(

I'M TOO SLOW - Getting old etc.:o

Yeah, I'm surprised more people aren't springing for the 470. If nothing else, it's more sensibly priced and runs cooler than the 480.

Because while it's cheaper than a 480, it's still more expensive than a 5870.

When you can beat an overclocked 470 with an overclocked 5850, you know they're a flop.

yes it would seem that the 470 versus 480 is very similar to the 5850 versus 5870 debate.
just like the ATI variants it would seem that the lower card can be overclocked to give the upper cards performance or very close to it, you just have to ask yourself if the price difference is worth it.
myself i don't see that the prices of the upper portion of 5850's £250+ being worth it over a 5870, but one of the £220 ones still is.

with the 470's and the 480's the prices are just too high unfortunately, but the £130 difference does make the 470 more tempting
