I've limited experience but my brother has been a Mazda 6 owner - the lower powered engines seem a bit gutless and I wouldn't want to tow with them personally but the higher output ones are OK (especially with a remap).
He works as a contractor and always on the road (before COVID-19) and had very few issues with them.
EDIT: Bare in mind I have pretty much always driven ~3L V6s including a Navara which might shape my opinion when it comes to towing.
Wouldn't say there was much in it personally - my parents for years ran Passats and my brother Mazda 6s the Mazdas are a touch more stylish and a touch more comfortable riding but it isn't a huge difference and fuel economy has generally favoured the VWs. Most of the VW engines have felt adequate or better while I'd only say the same for the top tier Mazda ones.
They both (Passat and Mazda 6) sound pretty average. What estates should I be looking at which are refined, comfortable with decent handling that can competently tow?
