As if you dont get more 500x more spam through friends than you will get via this group. Unless you mean emails etc which you can turn off in facebook settings.

You can choose to hide notifications from an individual or group permanently or on a post my post basis, and you can also stop the emails, so it's not exactly forcing it upon you

I really dont see what you mean. Whats it going to be a couple of posts a week no doubt? If you have any amount of friends on facebook its constant group/page/friend/status/useless crap all day anyway.
