Down under mate!
We not allowed to comment on the wall then?

No just you Stewart:D:p

Fan pages are stupid - we have one for our American football team, but have to keep the old style group page because with fan pages you can't send out messages (but with old style groups you can). Essentially, we can't wholly migrate to fan page, as we have to use an old style group to message our old boys about events.

So what's the benefit of this new group? Being sent FB messages RE: offers?

What football team do you play for mate?

Thats a fan page, a Group is a lot more powerful and we shall be doing some marketing around Facebook, so its worthwhile joining the group. :)

Will the marketing be exclusive to facebook or in any way designed to work well in that environment or will it just be a stream of copies of the deal posts on the forums?

I seem to recall the latter happening before at http://twitter.com/OcUK which evidently didn't go well as it seems to have stopped long ago :p

Most social media marketing campaigns fall flat on their faces because of the reason you describe.

I'm not saying a presence isn't good, because that's free, but that is still just customers coming looking for you. OcUK has that already. Who they want to target are the people not looking for them, that's the key strategic objective.
