Parts Not Fitting Together?

Hi all,

New here, looking to absorb as much information as possible.

To cut a long story short, decided to build my own server from components as a bit of a project.

I've been backwards and forwards between one of the major UK suppliers of hardware trying to find a heatsink + fan that will fit onto this motherboard, https://www.**********/products/sup...0-(x16)-2x-gbe-d-sub-(vga)-e-atx-server-mothe - I've so far tried 5 different products and none of them fit for various reasons - many the dimensions are too bit for the chassis but the latest one that did fit inside the chassis, the screw holes didn't line up on the heatsink to that which is on the motherboard - even though the product details say everything fits.

Am I missing something or is it just that the majority of information online about hardware is incorrect? All I need is a heatsink + fan that will fit on the motherboard so I can get the thing turned on.

Any and all help much appreciated.

Regards,
Michael

Have you tried contacting supermicro support for a list of coolers?

Someone having similar issues:

Seems you need a narrow ILM cooler. Supermicro actually make their own (hope the link is ok):

Don’t think any standard coolers will fit. They seem to be very niche (only Intel and SM seem to make them).

Thanks Minstadave, that is really useful, I hadn't come across that so I'll take a look at their website. I had no idea they even sold heatsinks, I only thought they did motherboards.

How did you come across this? I've primarily been searching around on product websites selling heatsink + fan products for weeks on/off trying to find something that fits - then all the specifications I've been reading suggests that they should fit, until I get them and try them and they don't fit. It's really confusing to know what to purchase with server related hardware. There seems to be a lot of compatability issues and very little accurate information from the majority of component reseller websites that I've come across. I've not checked the main Overclockers shop as I only realised that Overclockers had a shop when I registered on the forum, I always thought Overclockers was purely a forum, so I need to check out the details on here too.

To be honest I just googled it. I remember Linus from Linustechtips was having exactly the same issues with finding coolers for a dual Xeon build which pointed me in the right direction.
