Bit of a difference between removing CPUs and GPUs, and removing CD playback though. Considering every cheap DVD and Blu-ray player can play CDs, I can't see it being an effective cost-saver.

But sony's console stuff is usually custom made, so this is a rare condition, and their new optical drive most likely is being built from the ground up, therefore by not including non-essential parts could save a lot of money when you combine how many consoles they will sell overall. like i said even a saving as little as £2 (this is an example if you did not know, i do not know how much cd lasers cost to manufacture and place into a drive) has a huge effect on how much they lose.

Heres a quote for you redstar

from http://www.semperthree.com/backwards-compatibility.html

"The decision to remove PS2 compatibility, or 'backwards compatibility', from the PS3 caused a lot of controversy for Sony. Much of this stemming from their own early press releases stating the importance of providing this feature on the PS3.

How and Why PS2 Compatibility Was Removed

The PS2, released in 2000, used a pair of proprietary Sony-built processors in its chipset. These were the 'Emotion Engine' CPU and the 'Graphics Synthesizer' GPU. These were unique processors with distinct architecture that proved difficult to emulate and expensive to manufacture.

When the PS3 was released in 2006, it contained these two processors specifically for the purpose of running Playstation 2 games; this enabled nearly 100% PS2 compatibility. These were the original CECHA 60gb and CECHB 20gb launch models.

With the system still priced at nearly $600 retail, and production costs over $800 per unit, Sony needed to reduce the cost of manufacture AND reduce the price for consumers. With cheaper and more efficient replacement parts still a few years away, they had to cut costs and remove non-essential parts.

The 'Emotion engine' CPU was subsequently removed, leaving the 'Graphics Synthesizer' GPU combined with software-driven emulation to run PS2 games. Although this reduced production costs, the emulation turned out to be sub-par and resulted in only about 80% of PS2 games being playable. The only models to use this configuration were the CECHE 80gb console and the CECHC 60gb.

Eventually, Sony determined that the sub-par emulation combined with the continued expense of including the PS2 GPU, was not giving them the cost to performance ratio that they needed to achieve. Sony at this point introduced the first non-PS2 compatible PS3. The new 40gb models debuted at $399, a full $200 dollars cheaper than the original 60gb launch models.

Even with all these changes and others to the PS3 Sony was still losing money on every console made. But, with the removal of the backwards compatibility, Sony was able to greatly reduce the cost of the PS3 to the consumer and got much closer to finding the proper performance to cost ratio, that they were looking for."

Like i said about removing CD functionality, they have done it in the past in order to save costs before with their consoles. Therefore my logic in saying they removed CD in PS4 to save money is completely sound.

That is hilarious! you have completely missed the point and proved me correct in turn :D.

So basically Sony due to making a loss on the PS2 and PS3 using proprietary components like they done in the past they have now used components more in line with a standard pc. Also they will have saved millions in research and development due to AMD engineering the APU for them. Also with regards to removing CD play back, I did not dispute this at all. I was laughing at your estimate on the saving they will make :p

The post brightened up a slow day in work. Cheers bud :)

i used £2 as an example ;)

You just actually have no concept of what you're talking about, so rather than making yourself look silly just don't comment on it.

I have no idea how much the internals will cost or the exact details of them, so I haven't talked about them. Unlike you with your; RAM / £2 CD saving rubbish.

Good article on IGN regarding the PS4:

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/03/01/ps4-how-sony-is-setting-its-sights-on-world-domination

I especially liked this line...

"Sony will never leave Japan behind, but the PlayStation 4 reveal suggests to me that the company is going for America more aggressively than ever before. By getting out ahead of Microsoft’s next-generation console reveal and holding its event on the American giant’s own turf, Sony was making the statement that it wants to be number one everywhere – and it will not allow Microsoft the head-start that it enjoyed with the Xbox 360."

They also speak about less Japanese influence in this console than before and how some Japanese devs struggled this generation. They seem to have had a serious look at themselves and if I were Microsoft I would be very worried. Sony look to mean serious business this time.

well theres at least 1 site now taking pre-orders for £399

am i allowed to mention it ?

you can mention it, but as far as the price no one knows as of yet and sony wont say anytime before E3, and i wouldnt be surprised if the price isnt officialy announced until TGS. but i cant see anyone knowing pre E3 though as sony will want to hold off as late as possible to keep MS guessing.

Yep and I'm sure there will be stock shortages the first few months, there always is. Amazon will be allocated the most amount of units but I bet they met their quota within a hour or so of it being available to pre-order at some random point in time.
