Ok going round to a friends house tonight to play some poker, i've played a couple of games before so i pretty much know the jist of how to play - the hands etc (Well most of them ) What tips do you guys have for the new players to poker? Does being drunk help? I hope so...*takes another sip of beer*...*looks at clock...* ITS ONLY 1650? OMG I MUST NOT LOSE MY £5
Tip : Enjoy yourself! Avoid going all in just for kicks, because it won't be much fun when you're out of the game.
At the beginning of the night you want to play tight while the blinds are low. Give yourself time to get to grips with the game and to get an idea of how everyone else is playing. And I'd be careful about slow playing a decent pocket pair.
low bets to start with, use this time to 'learn' your opponent(s) then start to 'UP' your game when you feel ready
Oh and wear huge shades, and a fedora, and if you have long hair put it over your face so you look like the grudge. You wont look silly at all.
Don't waster time trying to work out how others are playing, to an inexperienced player this is pointless really. Focus on playing the top 10 starting hands and have a quick read of playing in position, bet out x3 the big blind if you have one of these hands and are in a strong position and you will be in a nice position for the rest of the hand. Don't be afraid to fold if you miss the flop. Most of all though, get drunk and have fun.
On a warm summers evenin on a train bound for nowhere, I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns a starin out the window at the darkness til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak. He said, son, Ive made a life out of readin peoples faces, And knowin what their cards were by the way they held their eyes. So if you dont mind my sayin, I can see youre out of aces. For a taste of your whiskey Ill give you some advice. So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow. Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light. And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression. Said, if youre gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right. You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when youre sittin at the table. Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done. Now evry gambler knows that the secret to survivin Is knowin what to throw away and knowing what to keep. cause evry hands a winner and evry hands a loser, And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep. So when hed finished speakin, he turned back towards the window, Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep. And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even. But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep. You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when youre sittin at the table. Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done. You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count you r money when youre sittin at the table. Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done.
Remember too that if everyone else checks and you have a bad hand CHECK don't fold. Checking costs you nothing and you may just luck out on a high card or a low hand.
