Really depends, I've been using the same pen at work for about a year now, your bog standard bic ballpointPens are so easy to lose. Most of them leak in my pockets too.
Would someone who does voluntary work (Probably a hippy-type who doesn't like consumerism, greed, excess.. etc.), really want a ball-point pen that costs £50? I doubt it.

I prefer the fine refills, so maybe get one of them, then she has a spare (albeit medium). You can buy cheaper alternatives in WHSmiths etc so you've not limited her to a life of expensive refilling...

Definitely this. If I got given an expensive ballpoint pen - I would accept it happily - but in my mind I'd be thinking "Wow... that was lame"
