Because it's always the same noises it sounds artificial as well, which I think spoils things.
Yeah, my z4c had the "sound generator" aka a pipe from engine going to the inside.. has foam bits both ends of it, I've removed one and that made it loud over 5k. Remove other and it sounds like a racecar.. too much for ddSome cars send real induction sound in to the car via a pipe (I know Ford ST/RS, GT86 does do it), those are ok because you can actually hear the real revs and what the engine is doing.
The fake electronic one are tacky though.

I did that on the old Z4. One trip to work and it put it back in at lunch. Was far to loud on the motorway for me to use as a daily back then. Sounded nice though.
Getting old I'm going to straight pipe my Z4..I did one end, not sure which now tho. Was fine on everything but the motorway. At cruising speed it was just that little bit to loud for me.
