What are they making you differently then for that increase ?

I'll need to do testing with accurate power again. I lowered my FTP to 300w on Strava as zwift had inflated it. Hard to be fully motivated with the prospect of no racing.

@Berger isn’t far wrong. :D

It’s hard to pin it down to one thing really. Increased training load is definitely a factor. I average around 12 hours a week now. Otherwise, I’d say doing back to back long rides Saturday and Sunday has helped, and doing endurance work at a much higher intensity than I would have done previously. My previous coach saw those endurance sessions in terms of time rather than a set effort so I’d probably do them at less than 70% rather than 80% as now. That’s given me a really good base for the more intense work.

I’d say my riding is a lot more focused which I enjoy but isn’t for everybody. I like having a target most of the time.

Sounds quite logical so sounds like a good coach. I probably went too hard on hard days and too easy on easy days blindly without a power meter.

Only used it twice outside so it'll be interesting to get data long term to see.

Been Zwifting a lot and seem to be sitting at these figures.

Did the 4DP yesterday.

Also set a new 20m record in a ride today (293W), chasing a lighter, but as powerful as me, friend all over Hertfordshire!

Had a power meter a touch over a month now so thought I'd pluck some figures from wattsboard. Yet to bother doing an FTP test. Too lazy.

I figured if I write some figures down I might be tempted to improve them...

Didn't really do much short effort wise at all last year. Not even broke 1000w yet.

My best ever peak power (so 1s) was 1033w.
I done the below at the end of a hard ride the other week. Unplanned effort out of a corner just because I felt alright.
Done my previous peak power for 5s and 100w more onto my peak power PB.
I've since done a 1175w peak as well.

No sprint training or anything. That's just from racing Zwift all winter..... I can barely get over 900w on my new 2018 Wahoo Kickr and the form/technique is insanely different so to be able to do that outside out of the blue has blown my mind a bit.
I'm climbing like **** and my 20min is nowhere near decent but it's nice to see something has got a bit better!

About time I brought these up to date, actually pretty useful for tracking.

Username - One More Solo
Age - 32
Height - 5ft 11in (still)
Weight - 65KG (+3kg)
FTP (60min) - 273w (still) W/KG - 4.2
CP20 - 310w W/KG - 4.77
CP5 - 350w W/KG - 5.38

CP figures from a 5 and 20 minute test this weekend. I've not done a 60 minute effort for a while but I think it would be more like 295w on the road these days. I switched coaches back in September 2019 and since then have gained +35w on my CP5 and CP20, which I'm delighted with as I thought as I was starting from a fairly trained base - clearly not!

Eeked my CP20 up to 310w on the turbo this weekend and did 311w normalised for a 10 a couple of weeks ago, so still tracking in the right direction.

No dramatic changes for me, but a nudge upwards in FTP during the Zwift MAAP Stage 3 event this morning which started off hot and kept going. I still need to do a proper FTP test sometime I'm feeling masochistic.

Age - 56
Weight - 79.5kg
FTP (60min) - 334W, 4.2W/kg (Zwift estimate). Strava estimate is 344W, 4.3W/kg and maybe a bit optimistic.

Wow, I forgotten how light I'd got last year. Just did a Half Monty again, but I'm still on my way down in weight.

Hoping to get back down around 94kg before too long (dropped 5kg in the last 6 or 7 weeks)

Carrying on the recent updated posts, my one is way out of date too! 2019 was blighted by bad health and injury from March until around August, but besides a cold I had around Sept/Oct, I've been making steady progress on recovering some of the ground I lost from March.

So from the past six weeks...

Age: 46
Height: No change... I hope!
Weight: 79.5Kg

5secs: 805W
1min: 498W
5min: 337W
20min: 301W*
60min: 273W*

4iiii, * were indoors during Zwift TT races, rest outdoors
Long overdue update!

Age: 48
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 79.6Kg (been as high as ~86Kg in mid Jan)

5sec: 697W [595]
1min: 467W [364]
5min: 359W [266]
20min: 314W [223]
60min: 272W [138]

Numbers in [] are where I was around mid Nov '21 after a ~3.5 week flu, also hit for six in Apr/Jun/Dec by Covid vaccine jabs and cold in Feb.

Thought my days of chasing my numbers were over in Nov, I've ridden everyday since 2nd Nov '21 for 30mins+ with exception of two days of ~25mins, didn't get my usual late winter/ early spring lurgy. Usually beating my own segment times when I attempt them, on segments I've done numerous times since '17, very surreal as getting older! Realised after finishing Zwift TT yesterday with best ever 18mins 318W, that I should have tried to continue for 20mins to achieve goals of a 300W+ 95% and possibly even 4W/Kg (which I never thought I would get near while nowhere near my Aug '17 weight of ~73Kg).

I think generally I bucked the trend of the last ~2.5 years, in that I think a lot of "number hunters" improved through the pandemic, while mine steadily and then suddenly slumped before now bizarrely being at the best they've ever been in the 5-20min range.

Still focusing my turbo (mostly Nov-Mar) efforts too much on 5-20min efforts (which easily covers time for me to climb Hampshire hills), not enough proper sub 60sec training and definitely not enough 30min+ threshold stamina training. I've got a new Deda adjustable stem to increase my saddle to bar tops drop from ~3cm to a max of ~8cm, but ironically I upset my weak lower back muscles the worst in 5+ years last weekend, while moving the new turbo out of the way to use the old on this past week (I chose the larger size Cube in '17 because of my weak back history since '08, but it's typically been much better the last few years).

I have days of weakness, but generally eating less choc raisins and hot cross buns since Feb, plus not been eating cereal when I get up and waiting to have something to eat 0900-1000ish.

In December last year I was around 85kg, with an FTP of 210w so 2.47w/kg. Did dirt destroyer followed straight away by build me up training plans, 18 weeks in all, FTP went from 210w to 246w to 269w. The last month I've been doing an 8/16 intermittent fast at 500 cal deficit to lose the lockdown belly and I've gone from 79.5kg to just under 75kg.

Next stop come autumn/winter will be to try and get to 4w/kg along with some upper body strength work.

is that a true 60min power or extrapolated? Only reason being your 5 minute power isn't as big a jump as i'd expect. Good improvement either way from where you started!

Yeah the 60 min is based on FTP rather than an actual 60 min max effort, and my FTP is based on ramp tests and/or 20 min FTP tests.

In fact that pb 5 min power was set on last night's ramp test, so not ideal conditions! Short power (1 sec-5 mins) is my biggest weakness but my training plan will be addressing this soon, I mostly mountain bike so it's good to have decent power over a few minutes for those punchy climbs.

Saying that, according to the Coggan chart my FTP and 5 min are decent, my 1 min and 5 sec are poor compared, I should be at 1100w 5s to be at the same level.

First attempt at an FTP test last night, unsure how accurate it would be. I had previously set my FTP manually to 190 which felt around right whenever i'd done FTP based workouts, maybe a little low but i usually enjoy not killing myself!

I did the 20 minute ramp test on Zwift which gave me an FTP of 189w so pretty much inline with what i'd set manually. The only thing confusing me is that the ramp test seems to be based off your current FTP and so presumably that's the key driver rather than what i'm actually capable of? The last segment was 1min of 250w and i definitely felt i could've carried for a few more rounds which was at odds with what the Zwift notes were telling me about how much i'd be suffering by the end.

Is there a better test to do on Zwift?

Another interesting thing was that my cranks regularly read a lot lower than the Kickr, usually around 20-25%. It'd be interesting to see which is actually accurate!

The ramp test is loosely based off you set FTP in that if you had set 350W, I think it skips the early power bands and will start in the 200W range. If you set it to 120W, then it would start much lower. There is a lot of room at the top end to hit failure though, so you would have to really under rate your FTP to be able to go beyond the intervals set. If you hit your failure point with a good warm up and really feel you can’t go further, then the ramp test has worked and the value will be in the right ballpark. Ramp tests can take a bit of getting used so though and it’s not uncommon to have early ‘gains’ as you learn how to approach them best.

I find the ramp test generally gives me a higher FTP than I can average over 60minutes in Zwift events, but it could be the surging nature of the events. You can do a short FTP (20 minute) or long FTP (60) and it will average your power.

The alternative is to do an 20 minute event and aim to maintain your max pace for that period, Swift will then update FTP if it is greater than expected. I think it is 0.95x20 minute average for FTP. So it will constantly assess and update FTP when game is running, but needs minimum 20min. If you log in to Zwift, it can give some more power stats.

Cheers, i might try and do a full hour based effort and see what it reports. 190W feels like it'd be about right for the hour, but the ramp test just didn't feel right. Maybe i'll try doing another setting my FTP to 210W and see if that leaves me as dead as i should be!
