GM is what happened. Turned them into (better than) Vauxhalls. Although they were in trouble anyway because they were designed by engineers instead of accountants so they were making a loss on every car they sold.

Yep, taking the turbo off certainly proves it wasn't for nothing! Gubbed, one might say.

Shaft play/knackered bearings is the cause.

Are you certain? That doesn't look like the usual signs of failed bearings, typically you just get damage on the outer edges of the blades and scoring on the housing rather than huge chunks of the blade getting smashed off.

This looks much more like the damage you get when a turbo has ingested something solid. Not saying the bearings aren't knackered as well mind.

Make sure you flush any blade debris out of the intercooler.

Not entirely true all it takes is the blades to start scoring away at the compressor housing which will lead to the blades catching and snapping.

When my CT20B went the entire turbine housing had score marks all over the inside where it had scraped the sides. The turbine was cermaic and in a million bits sitting on top of the cat!
