Never seen a 106 GTI that cheap, that's more the going rate for a 106 XND or something.

There have been a couple near £500. Not been in very good condition though and up for a quick sale for whatever reason.

Someone on the forums managed to get one for £700 in really good nick not so long ago iirc, such a bargain. Owner didn't know what it was worth. They are about, just need to look hard enough.

Volvo 700 series?

This. The B230FT engine (as found in the high pressure turbo) is pretty decent and easy to tune even if it is only 155bhp as standard and the 740 is a bit of a tank.

You can get a 940 for that sort of money these days too. (basically the same car, just newer)

Get an old 535i, could even get a high-mileage (200k) 525i Sport (with LSD) for that kind of money..........Should soldier on just fine - many in that price you see at that kind of price have already done such a rally without issue! :D :p

Better off looking for a mk1 saxo vts they always seem to be a couple hundred quid less than the cheapest 106 gti
