Firstly - hope this is posted in the correct section of the forums. :)

But can anyone recommend a good Usenet provider? Priority is reliability, speed and retention.

I was on "Newshosting.com" before but it has now expired and am in need of a new account. I could stay at Newshosting as they exceed 35 days on retention for Binary groups and over 90 days on text groups. But they can be quite costly.

Are there any recommendations and what do other people use?

usenet-news.net have a special on. 100gb non expiring blocks for $28. With 60days retention and choice of servers, it can be pretty good value. Depends on how much you download really.

Depends what you mean by fast. Many of the providers will let you pull 30-40mbit at times.

    Giganews

Meets all you requirements with reliability, speed and retention though they are far from the cheapest option. I use the Silver package as 25GB/month is more than enough for me. They are in my experiance lightening fast and easily max out 8Mb broadband connections.

OK... I've been aware of Giganews for a long time. I was with Newshosting's Unlimited account for £45 for 6 months and have downloaded no less than 300/400GB in total... which works out £7.50 per month.

Giganews seems pretty expensive... so I might be persuaded to stick with what I have now. But I've heard some issues with Giganews that they begin throttling you if you download too much in a consecutive period.

erm newshostings is by far gonna give you the best price for what you have listed.......

£8 a month for unlimited access?

Dunno what you are trying to do £45 for 6 months access is still a bargain? I doubt you will get cheaper than that any where

I went from using bitorrent to usenet and it is 200X faster... Bitorrent takes forever just to start downloading. Usenet uses my full 8MB line, easily.

Yes, I think I'm better off with this. It maxes out my 2mbit connection most of the time. Majority of their groups are uncensored and good binary retention and no throttling.

Err, It's a little bit more complicated than that mate.

Download Usenet Grabit, It's good for beginners.

This is quite a good search website to look for files:
    Link removed. FF.

Install Grabit, insert the newsserver details then search for files and download.
