Lol it's Armageus' annual I broke something post, so prepare for some "noob" content:

Noticed in the last few days gear shifting started to become less than smooth, so have checked chain length and is over 1% with one of those wear gauge things that I should use more often.
However looking at the rest of the drivetrain, the Cassette looks fine, but all 3 of my chainrings are in bad shape ("shark teeth", as well as a couple of very square broken looking teeth, and general corrosion).
edit: realised this is just the shape of the smaller and mid rings and specific teeth to assist in changing gear

Assuming I should replace the whole lot, and would like to give it a go myself (rather than pay anyone - upon checking cassette realised local LBS had fitted "wrong" cassette last time).

Bike is a 2011 Lapierre Audacio 200: Shimano Claris 2300 8 Speed Triple (Cassette should be 13-26 although has a 12-25 fitted, and chainrings are 52/42/30).

1. I have a generic Aldi bike toolkit which has a chain rivet extractor, freewheel remover, crank arm remover, chain whip etc - is there anything else I need in that regard?

2. For cassette I assume I just need: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-hg50-8-speed-cassette-road/

3. For chain what is the difference between these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-cn-hg40-6-7-8-speed-116-link-chain/ http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-hg71-678-speed-chain/? And presumably they are long enough?

4. Not sure which chain rings I need? Appreciate Claris 2300 is "old tech", but surely must be able to get parts?
EDIT: In retrospect, only really need the outer 52T Chainring (as barely use the middle and don't use the small, and can presumably just clean them up and re-spray to make good?)

Is stamped as an SG A-52, having measured between bolt holes (76.4) and non adjacent bolt holes (123.6) looks to be
BCD of 130 (based on Sheldon Brown table)

This might be the closest I can find?

Have had a look at the GCN youtube videos and seems reasonably straight forward, but any other tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Managed to source a whole FC-2303 crank/chainset "new old stock" for £45. Ordered the HG50 13-26, HG71 Chain and a KMC Quicklink, and while I'm at it another 25mm GP 4 Season to replace the wire 28mm Gatorskin that I've not got round to replacing.

Busy times ahead :)

I've got some wierd horrible creak coming from my Ridley and I cannot for the life of me work out where it is coming from!

It's mainly the left side so I thought it was the pedal, no play in this or the cranks, so checked everything associated even taking apart the rear freehub etc and cleaning it up, along with cassette etc, still there. Going to try the bottom bracket next but will have no idea where to go if it isn't that. Haven't had any horrible noises for a while and forget how frustrating they are to solve.
Do you get it more when laying down any higher wattage? More when out of the saddle? Could just be grit between pedals/bearing covers/bb interface?

I could live off Moussaka!

Yeah a fair bit. Though all my excuses failed today. 1000m, 67km and 35c! Ran out of water about 36km in, luckily found a shop in the next village.
Haha yeah, me too!
Had some in Rhodes where I think it'd been cooked with some kinda maple glaze on top, almost a crunchy sugar like layer on top, without too much sweetness but it had infused the top layers with a slight honey like taste which really offset some of the deeper flavours below. I only discovered it on the second to last day so only had it twice... Think this was the restaurant.

Good riding in those temps, saw the same issue here on the weekend and it was only reaching 30's towards the end of the ride! :o

I know it's a bit late now, but I personally would've looked to move to 10 speed.

There's also still some fantastic deals to be had on Ultegra 6700 and 105 5700 if you can find them, also second hand/barely used! I saw an Ultegra 6700 compact crankset barely used sell for £38 on 'bay recently! Came close to grabbing for the other half & upgrading her :)

Canyon provide one of these handy little tools...

I picked up a cheapy Toppeak version and actually surprised how much I've used it rather than the bigger clicker types! So quick & easy to just grab and use without having to set anything.

I did think about it, but a bit more than I wanted to spend at the moment, and I think changing the bits I've ordered will be enough of a challenge, let alone anything more :)

Definitely one to think about for the future though - having struggled to find 8 speed parts this time, although given the amount I use it, will probably be another couple of years at least before I need to worry.

Chain Length.

I know these are massively oversized jockey wheels but reckon I could take a couple of links out? My chain is skipping a little over bumps, so presume it is a little slack.

Ha sorry for my terrible explanation. What I did was, put it in the bottom pic position, and then push forward the RD cage/ OSJWs as far as it goes (towards the front of the bike) until it locks out in the forward position, then let it go back slightly from that position, so it isn't fully tight and use that as your chain length

Ahhh, so definitely far too slack. Might try couple of links at a time. Reckon based on your description that'd be at least 4 out of it.
