As SPW said, hotlinking isn't allowed I'm afraid. I know gifs aren't allowed, but this image is amazing. A planet disturbing the rings. MANY more pictures can be found: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/10/saturn_at_equinox.html Take a look, there beautiful.
Gifs are fine, just not as your signature, see the funny gifs thread for confirmation that they are acceptable in the right places. However hotlinking images isn't ok I'm afraid. If you don't have webspace of your own then feel free to let me know and I could host some for a while. Thank you for highlighting though, they're quite stunning pictures.
I've always had a slight fascination with the planets. Even from a young age the variety of colours, size and their own quirks (e.g. Jupiter produces more heat than it recieves from the sun) have all been really interesting. I can't find a link right now but apparently Saturn has a much larger ring around it which is slightly offset compared to rest.
All images courtesy of Boston.com, just rehosted as it would be a real shame for people to miss these pictures.
More on the equinox here: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA11667 Watch this great slideshow: http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/cassini_equinox/cassini_equinox_slideshow.html
What gets me is the scale - the rings are something like 80,000km in thickness. The earth is ~40,000 km circumference.
Thats nothing, how about the scale of the newly discovered one: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/spitzer/multimedia/spitzer-20091007a.html
If i could buy my way into space, i would love to do a tour of jupiter and Saturn and there moons. That's my dream
It’s made up from tiny particles of ice and dust and thought to be debris from one of Saturn’s moons Phoebe.
Some fantastic images there, thanks Teki am always impressed with your links of astronomical interest.
