So, im not me then! Absurd NI issue

I went to the dentist on Tuesday and they asked for my "New" NI number and i was WTF?? Apperently i can get it from my Doctor or from a hospital visit. Why the dentist doesnt have it i dont know and WTF did i need a new one for??
