software for adding text to images

I'm looking for free software that will enable me to add text to images. Something along the lines of paint but with a good selection of fonts and text effects like embossing and shadows etc.

Tried google but there's 1000s out there most of which appear to be on iffy sites

All suggestions appreciated.

Paint.NET or Gimp.

Both will work. Neither are particularly specialised in terms of only doing text stuff but tbh if you learn them you'll be able to do 90% of anything you'd want to do in terms of image manipulation so it's worth learning it all in one environment (rather than one dodgy free program for x, another for y and having to relearn every time you want to change something).

I use imageMagick from the command line in Linux for this kind of batch processing. Don't know if there is a windows version yet. Otherwise with the GIMP you can create some scripts to batch process a bunch of images.

I don't recall anything about batch processing being said in the OP? Have I missed something?
