What are these 'commitments' which mean this has to be done late at night? Are you telling me you can't lever in space in the daytime, around what I presume to be uni and work?

Well, yeah. However the music takes up a lot of time. At the moment a lot of my spare time is going towards getting this EP ready for release. I also have a few gigs coming up, which I need to plan for, as well as promoting myself, constantly contacting clubs and AR people, it's a lot of hard work breaking into the scene :)

If you don't understand why he can't "just use headphones" and feel the best advice and discussion you can offer is to keep asking why he can't "just use headphones" then please keep out of this thread and stop making a fool out of yourself.

There are no headphones that will allow you to mix without speakers, there are headphones that will allow you to mix in terms of producing though, perhaps this is where the confusion is coming from?

Sennheiser HD25 are held in high regard for producing dance music on as they sound fairly close to flat monitors, they are about £150 though.

I'd suggest using a graphic eq to cut out the frequencies which resonate most, other than that, mass and density is your friend.

I sympathise with the OP for the ridiculous answers here. I don't DJ myself but I've been clubbing enough to know that you need monitors over the out-mix. I started a thread to see if there were any LJs/VJs (light jock) and I got ridiculed too.

You might get better responses on a clubbing forum but I don't know where to go nowadays as the old Sundissential one hit the hay a while back and everything seems to be on social networking (i.e. Facebook) nowadays.

This is the issue, money :D I have a pair of those awesome Panasonic headphones, and a pair of Reloop RHP-10s, but both of them are too bass heavy. I think my mate has just pulled up his carpet, so I'll ask him if he has any spare :)

find a place that ius getting ridf of egg boxes. or a place you can buy them i nbulk?

p-lus dumpster diving for carpet.

Haha dumpster diving, we found a sofa for a house party doing that once :D

So, music in daytime gaps. Other related stuff, which doesn't result in you making an awful racket, in the evening?!

Also, careful you don't put too much time into this... failing another year would not be good :\.

Problem is, even if I do that I'm still producing till quite late. Once you get started on a project, it's hard to stop!

And I know mate, I'm keeping on top of everything this year, especially since I've been single. It's only when you lose everything that you can do anything :). And I've finally got to the point where I am happy in the direction that my life is taking :)

Digitaldjtips is a great website, as is drowned in sound. For specialised genres there are a load of great websites too!

Two of the best resources for everyone from starters to semi-professionals are boyinaband, and Point Blank. I've learned so much from them!

I do want to get into LDJing though, I'd be a hit at some of the uni parties I go to ;)

Thanks for all the great responses guys!

How about some headphones?

I jest, I read the thread, I just have nothing useful to add. I just whack my Electribe though my surround sound system, I don't have neighbours to worry about :D.

Mods must be asleep as I can't believe I read 4 pages of ****.

Anyway. Sound proofing a room is going to be hard. You could sound treat the room so you get better acoustics in it. But that's not going to help you with DJing. Foam on walls = Sound treatment as it's dampening the room to stop the rooms natural reverb. Sound panels will direct the sound so you can keep it in the center of a room. What you really want to do is stop the bass escaping as that's what's going to be heard from outside the walls. If it was you're own place I would suggest lots and lots of sand lol.

Give it a read and see what you can do. I understand your problem with mixing at night though. I have wanted to do some live shows for some internet radio stations but can't because of a shared house and yeah it's impossible to mix through headphones alone.

Oh and if your monitors are not on soundpads or raised off the surface they are on, well that's a good start.

Even exensive headphones are likely to be cheaper than soundproofing a wall. They come with the added benefit of being able to take them with you to the next place or sell them afterwards. They also don't require you to make good the walls when you move out.
