I thought spotify was free now and didn't require an invite?

I'm sure I read that in the news.

Yea its quite unfortunate that they dont offer some sort of free service on the iPhone to at least try before you buy.

They are essentially the same, but with Spotify Open you can only listen for 20 hours per month. With an invite you can listen as long as you like.
