Glad I have my Mk5, perfect car really.
Euro6 but without that annoying Adblue. Decent power around 220bhp and gets me about 56mpg.
Looks smart, huge boot. What's not to like, I really don't like all these crossovers.

I brought a new Mk1 in 1993. It was a 2.0l petrol Ghia hatchback and the colour was Cayman Blue. A few months into ownership it was stolen by using a 50p screwdriver. All the wheels were removed and windows smashed, it was never the same.
Several years later, in 2008, I purchased a new mk4 2.0l diesel, tango red, titanium x. Loved that car but my current A4 is in another league...

Really? I've driven a 2012 A4 (B8) a few times and I think my Mk4.5 Mondeo Titanium X is better. the Audi didn't feel as taught and road noise was higher as well plus a bit crashy on rough roads - most reviews agree stating the A4 is a boring drive and the Mondeo mk4/4.5 is class leading in this respect.

The boot was a lot smaller as well (both estates) - but I think the Mondeo is actually a class size above the A4 - it's more A6 sized I think.

Had a few over the years. In fact still got 2 at the moment

the mk5 is a pile of steaming dog turds in comparison to the mk4.5 in terms of build quality and reliability.

If I could find a nice 4.5 estate with the 240 bhp eco boost lump for sensible money Id have it.
You really haven't had a good time with the Mk5 have you. Mines been faultless, it's been the perfect car.

Never had a Mondeo, they never really appealed to me. I think as a kid I was still mourning the death of the Sierra Cosworth, when the Mondeo appeared and I thought WTF? I remember waiting for a Cosworth version but of course it never came. In my adolescent mind I wrote off the Mondeo and never considered it as an adult.

Saying that, I do see the appeal for the car over the years. Funny however that I can’t remember actually seeing one on the road for years.

Was thinking that when I first saw this thread - for a car that used to be everywhere I can't remember the last time I saw one.

2 of them neither of which have been decent, 350k miles between them so far and thats including most of the past 12 months sitting in the yard doing bugger all

the mk4 is better in every way bar infotainment

better NVH better road manners more spacious and a much more engaging drive

Compared to a b9 saloon, not a b8. Yes the mk4 mondeo has better handling characteristics and comfier seats but that's about it. Definitely the A4 is quieter, more refined and thrashes the mondeo with it's tech. The problem with the mondeo is that the mk5 is too big...

Well of course a B9 will be better in terms of tech and road noise than a Mk4 - there are 9 years between the designs!

Now you're talking crazy!

To me, anything smaller than a Mondeo feels cramped. But I've always driven big Fords so.....

It's definitely not too big. I couldn't go smaller now only just fit everything in now.

Well it just our personal opinions aren't they, am I not entitled to mine? The mk5 is a bulk of a car, but don't get me started on the build quality. Many, many owners of the mk4 had complaints about rattles, drive shaft failures, side view obscured when it rains and the climate couldn't cool the cabin enough in the summer. The talkford forum was full of them. My m4 had a engine warning light come on twice because it wasn't cleaning the dpf properly. That was the only issue I had, however I do still have a love for them...

Just been reading through the A4 forums and see many of the same complaints.

The Mondeo outscores the A4 on actual reliability surveys:-

https://www.whatcar.com/news/2020-what-car-reliability-survey-executive-cars/n20054

And then the A6 comes a convincing bottom!

https://www.whatcar.com/news/2020-what-car-reliability-survey-luxury-cars/n20063

I still stand by my statement that the Mondeo MK4 (and Mk4.5 especially) is objectively a better car than an Audi A4 of similar age (i.e. B8) (they are just slightly bigger posh VW Golf after all).

I had a Mk1 as a company car, 1.8LX I seem to recall in metallic grey. Moved into it from a Sierra and it was a big step forward dynamically, though I did miss the sideways joys of RWD. Good family car the Mondeo but time moves on.

Probably the worst source given it is an owner's survey and the ownership of Mondeo's is so low.

Mk4.5 what a car and the boot is massive too
Agreed - this is mine - 2.0tdci Titanium X powershift chipped to 200bhp, 150k miles and drives faultlessly. It's no Scorpio, but it's close.

Wow. That Clarkson segment was the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw this article. I'm genuinely shocked it was 2006 when it aired.

I think they may have mentioned it again on Grand Tour (or maybe while they were still on TG) a few years back when Ford were looking to discontinue it then.
