In 1989 there was an incident where 2 Libyan Mig 23's engaged 2 F-14 Tomcat's from the carrier USS John F Kennedy. It was normal for jets to track each other but when Mig's were ' painted ' by the F-14's highly advanced radar, they usually disengaged but these 2 didn't .... and paid the price.

The following is footage from the incident, with documentary music and narration. The real Top Gun and not a bad video, quite apt really as the last F-14's are phased out from US carriers. * sad *

They had every chance to disengage and the F-14's were sent to escort them from the zone around the carrier.

When a carrier or fighters are under threat, what else would you do ?

It wasn't a dig at you Z, far from it. It was an open question. :)

Didn't take it as a dig, I just really wouldn't like to be seen as a "omfg that's terrible" poster, because I really hate them :o

Approach them carefully from behind, roll the plane inverted, and then give them the finger from a couple a metres away.

    OBVIOUSLY.

According to reports found by googling, both mig pilots ejected and parachuted down safely, however the libyan government made no effort to recover them

The audio from that - sounds very familiar. Isn't it in the music to the game Lock-On?

    /edit - it was Falcon 4.0. Christ I'm a nerd.

Was it just me who thought the Americans sounded very unprofessional? I'm not doubting their ability but that is how it seemed to me.
