Just to drag this one up, apparently this list is in the latest Evo mag, a "Best hot hatch" list based on driving enjoyment by John Barker:

1.Clio Williams
2.Clio 182 Trophy/Cup
3.306 Rallye
4.106 GTI
5.Mini Cooper S
6.205 GTI 1.9
7.Mk1 Golf
8. Saxo VTR

Surprised at a VTR and not VTS being there, esp when the 106 is as high up. Also they said the top 3 were pretty interchangable depending on conditions.

the saxo/106 are the same car.
that's probably why only the 106 is on the list.

Yeah that's why i said about the 106, surprised they didn't say 106/VTS, but I know they've always favoured the 106 handling over the VTS.

They must love their french hatches, 6 out of 8...

They did. Peugeot 106 Rallye's used the 8v unit :) Don't think it was the same as the VTR engine though but I'm not clued up on 106's :)

P.S - No letter about my "speeding incident" so far The Dark Side :) Two weeks is up on Sunday so I'll give them a few days grace before I start partying :D

IIRC the 106 has slightly better suspension bump/rebound characteristics.

106 is around 15mm lower with thicker rear anti-roll bar.

s2 106 rallye used the 1.6 vtr lump but with a higher rev limiter, different inlet and head and produced around 110bhp instead of 90/98 on the vtr.

yeah but wasn't the rallye on carbs and not injection?
the saxo's are almost identical bar the 16v head and associated components to go with it.

Pretty much my choice as well, although I can't decide between the 1.6 or the 1.9 GTi.
1.6 every time...proof that "more power" doesn't always make things better all round.
the 1.9 has just a tad too much oomph to spoil the car IMHO.
