Don’t know about modern hatches, but here’s what I can personally vouch for (in no particular order):

Sunny GTi
Sunny/Pulsar GTi-R (a bit heavy - need to be modded lighter)
Clio Williams
205 GTi
Golf MK2 8V

Some of the Civics too.

Lots of nice cars but no-one's mentioned the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus.
In that black and silver colour scheme too.. what a car.

PS. Mk1 Rover 800 Vitesse: - Ein England, dey call it da fastback

Tony Pond drove one round the Isle of Man and "averaged" 100 mph way back in the late 80's..
He reached 150 mph on the straights, let's see a 205 GTi do that..

FInally a vote for the crazy GTI-R. SUnny gti is one hell of a sleeper, and the SR is a great warm hatch (i love mine).

No mention of the Mk2 Astra GTE 16V?

I wouldn't have a Top 5 Hot hatch list, but here's a few of my favourite:

Mk1 1.8 Golf GTI
R5 GT Turbo
Mk3 Escort RS Turbo
1.6 205 GTI
Mk2 Golf G60 or 16V (can't decide).
Mk2 Astra GTE 16V

:)

The Pulsar GTi-R was the lightest of all the period roadgoing rally cars. In fact at 1200kg or less depending on what model you went for, it's pretty damn light by any standard.
This was reflected in the fact that it was quicker at accelerating than all those cars of the time including the Escort Cosworth

It also gets my vote

I won't bother with another 4 since looking at the lists of cars the list and guidelines seems to be so random i'm not really sure what the point of the post was...

Except to laugh at the Focus ST170, surely that person wasn't serious? :p

Only one person has mentioned the car that started it all the Alfasud.
I had a few of these and although complete rot boxes they were brilliant and pawned most on the road at the time.

So.
Alfasud.
Mk1 Golf Gti.
205 1.9Gti not the 1.6.
Escort Cozzy.
Williams Renault Clio.

Pulsar GTi-R also gets my vote, having owned a 300bhp one, i can safely say it is the best hot hatch i have owned.

Bye bye audi tt's :)

A rally homolagation car is NOT a hot hatch.

IMO a hot hatch is a normal car with a decent engine and is a good overall package, Clio 172/182, 205Gtis, Ek9 civics etc. I think 4x4 transmission detracts from the hot hatch theme and then the car becomes more of a sports car.

Of course not everyone will agree but I don't see how an escort cossie, Gti-R or a lancia delta integrale can be a hot hatch. They are rally machines for the road
