Am I allowed a Rover 220 GSi Turbo?

Rover produced the Coupe Turbo so I'm guessing the GSi is known as a hatch? :p
No you're not :p Has a great engine but thats about it. The standard suspension isn't great and the brakes aren't either.

It was more of a family car with a big engine, which was a shame as the car is transformed with suspension and brakes, shame rover didn't do that from the factory.

Yeah, I amended my thoughts after Fox posted about the Foci. ;)

And I agree, real shame about them having poo brakes and suspension. If they'd upgraded the GSi's like they did the Z cars, the GSi's would have been some serious machines.

Quite happy with the suspension on the 420T, much flatter through the corners than the Civic VTi I had before.

Astra GTE 16v should be in the hot hatch lineup
306 GTi-6 too because its so damn good at what hot hatches do
A Clio of some variety, the 172 I guess
205GTi obviously

306 GTI-6/RALLYE (JC even mentioned it was one of the best hot hatches ever made)
205 GTI
CLIO WILLAMS
CLIO 172/182/CUP
106 GTI/SAXO VTS

As you can see, I like my french cars :)

Hmm, in no paticular order:

106 GTi (obviously - it's the only one I've driven :p)

Other favourites that I've not driven include:

205 GTi
R5GTT
Clio 172/182
Lotus Talbot Sunbeam
Clio Williams
Mk1/2 Golf GTi

Does the Lotus Cortina sort of count as a hot hatch?

No hatch equals no Hot hatch.
Personally i feel the term hot hatch is to describe small quick hatchbacks.
Not motors like a Sierra cozzy for instance. Although a hatch and very hot to me it is not a hot hatch. Yes i know. :p

1. Mk1 Golf GTI (my 1st car!)
Fantastic car at the time, a thrill every time I drove it. I really miss that car (YPP690X)

2. Pug 206gti 1.6
Only drove one of these once, and was ALMOST as good as my golf.

3, 4, 5. Not really driven any others so my knowledge of them is very limited. If push came to shove and I had to name 3 more, it would only be on others opinions and reviews, which is not really a fair representation.... but :D

3. R5 GTT

4. Renault Clio (one of the 'sportier' variants) 172/182?

5. Mk1 Astra GTE
My friend had one, and it was relatively quick, and did actually look not bad back then

My votes go to:

1. Golf GTi mk2 16v - Probably about the best allrounder for years
2. Renault 5GTT - Simply awesome, as long as you exclude build quality
3. Astra mk2 GTE 16v - Stupidly powerful engine in a chassis that couldn't cope. The forerunner of the 2ltr engines we have now
4. Corolla GT Twin cam (AE82). The first really good Japanese hot hatch. More than a match for the Golf mk2 GTi 8v, and a good deal cheaper. HUGE amount of fun.
5. Clio Williams. Forefather to the later Clios.

1. Peugeot 106 GTi
2. VW Golf Gti Mk1
3. Lotus Sunbeam
4. Renault Clio Cup 182
5. Rover Metro GTi

Hot hatches aren't meant to be super cars, just an extreme sporty small car. Most of the current crop (Civic Type R etc.) try to play the numbers game and seem to forget about the fun.

It looks like i'm missing out on quite a bit having not driven an early golf GTI, were they really that good?

Yes. My favourite was a Mk2 in Monza blue. I have had loads of Golfs and they have all gone well and taken untold abuse. Solid little motors way ahead of there time.
After the Mk2 though they toned them down a bit. PPPfffff Gayers. :p

I'm back baby!
205 GTI has to be in there really, as does the Golf GTI. The Clio Williams was great and though it might have been a forefather to the 172 and later the 182 it doesn't really compare. No surprises about my first choice.

Clio 172 Cup
205 Mi16
Golf GTI
Astra GTE
Escort RST

Have to say, that I don't think it fair to include the Cossie, Delta Integrale or Sunny GTiR, all of which were 4wd rally cars, and as such, substantially more expensive than the more normal hot hatches.
Having said that, the Sunny GTi, and Delta HF turbo weren't bad cars.

Ref the AE86, nope, that's not a hot hatch, usually a well rusted coupe now.

Lastly, the AE92 Corolla GTi was nothing like as good as the AE82 GT Twin cam version. Same engine, but a lot heavier and worse steering.

At the end of the day its personal opinion, I've not driven a lot of the cars other people have proposed but have loved to bits every one of the Corolla Gti's that I've had, rust or no rust.
