Ah, I miss the days of MTW2. Back when CA made decent total war games and not the crap arcade hero ****** they keep regurgitating.

It was a brilliant and grand game, but let’s not kid ourselves, it had huge flaws on release that weren't fixed for ages e.g. the AI running round and round under archer fire until they all died, every single battle.

I'm playing this on easy. It's still pretty tough.

what I mean yes, yes you win battles even those that really are against you but it's still hard regarding managing the economy and being attacked by other armies whilst your left undefended.

I don't really know what to go for first, stone / wood or bronze etc...

I've actually found it far more fun playing as Sharpe of Ithaca after a few abortive starts. It's supposed to be a hard starting situation but some of the specialist units and the ability of Spies to build safe havens in non owned cities is making it very enjoyable.

There is some tinted glasses going on, sure. One thing the newer games do better is the pathfinding, it is infinitely better in comparison. The battles are also much more, more fluid.

But, the newer titles I find far less engrossing and atmospheric. A lot of this hinges around the generals mechanic, as it was a hell of a lot better when they developed their own traits based purely on their leadership and experiences in the field of battle.

The fact that you now pick upgrades and 'level up' like an RPG is bs and a ruinous change for me. Music was also a big factor too, especially the pre-battle music.

I mean how freaking epic was that?

Medieval 2 was probably the best TW game in my opinion.

It managed to get so many things right.

I like the different resources and bartering options that opens up, not everything costs gold like Warhammer2.
I like gods and the bonuses they give.
I don't like the shallow unit roster and how most factions feel the same.

But overall I'm happy with the game and I think its a decent TW release.

Actually really enjoying this, especially as it was free!

I can echo the above post ^

Love the economy system and the fact it forces you to have to be involved in diplomacy, make barter deals all the time etc.
The gods thing is quite cool and adds a bit of interest.

It isn't perfect though because it sort of all feels a bit fake/unbalanced as many other factions have insane amounts of food. I realise this is likely so it forces you to have to barter with them to get food, but it would be better if there wasnt a forced/fake way of doing this.

Along those lines, i just become the favoured son (playing as Hector) and i though that would mean i would get all of Priam's and Paris' resources, but no. Instead i got a couple of regions and about 4 new armies (one of which is amazing, but the upkeep is insane). So that immedietly put me from +2000 food to - 15000 food....(!)

So i had to disband almost everything i received anyway (except the amazing army with all top tier units and the highest rank). I have made it work, but there is no logical reason why you shouldn't receive Priam and Paris' resources : / and it makes receiving their units pointless as there is no way you can afford them.

Defending a large kingdom/multiple islands is pretty tricky too because enemies just pop out of the fog of war in the sea every turn with big stacks and unless you have upgraded a settlement to the max with the highest tier Trojan tower the garrison doesn't do much. It keeps you on your toes i guess.

So, i would say it is good that it is challenging and i am enjoying it....but it sort of feels like the challenge is forced/fake in away.

Oh i also hate the hitpoints system. I know this has always been there to a certain degree, but it seems excessive here. For example a unit can take multiple volleys of arrows before losing even one soldier. Just spoils the immersion/realism factor. i know it is a game, but i would prefer this to be more balanced so all units dont have some magic aura around them for the first few attacks. I remember in the old games (mainly before Total war and before we had hero units), the first volley of arrows or first charge would still pick of soldiers straight away.

Glad it was free, at I lost interest after two campaign starts.

Diplomacy is simultaneously irrelevant and completely exploitable due to broken trade logic, and the economy & unit balance railroad you into precisely one way of playing.

While the pathfinding & graphics are obviously better, and the interface a little more tuned, I long for a game that plays more like M2TW.

I got this and was rather enjoying it. But hit a bug (on two different playthroughs) where a hero and his army got stuck on the campaign map and couldn't move. Pretty much game ending. So have decided not to play any further until they patch that out. I have reported it to them on their own forum and supplied a save game so fingers crossed.

Is this before or after the 7GB patch released yesterday?

Before. I will have to check the patch notes to see if it's mentioned - but the mod on their forum asked for the save game file, I provided it, then they never responded, so I'm not too hopeful! :D
