Unexpected reply 530 Access denied

Can this be done?

Netgear DG834GT with BT Broadband. Has anyone been able to setup, send alerts and logs via email.
Send E-mail Notification Tried 217.12.13.134 as outgoing mail sever and mail.btinternet.com

This worked with a Vigor2710 and a BT Business Hub!

No luck, get unexpected reply 530 Access denied

530 = requires authentication. You need to fill in a username/password for your email account.
