Looking at this and it doesnt look like its worth upgrading to newer chipsets:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crossfire-pci-express,2095-7.html

Only advantage I can see is newer sata controllers etc, and easier to get higher fsb.

I have an asus p5wdg2 ws pro board (the one that can do 400fsb with no probs) and a e6600 at 3.75ghz, 2gb c4 gskill ram and was looking at upgrading. Would like to keep board so thought id pick up a q9650 (for the high multiplier), and a set of 2x2gb ram sticks. Would this sound sensible of should I splash out on an X48 chipset board?

That gigabyte is a rather nice board - i want one :)

However, as you are planning to get £280 cpu and £100 motherboard to use it, would it not make sense to go for an i7 system where you can get the CPU for a £230 and a motherboard for £150? - ie same total cost for a faster setup
Also, i7 RAM is getting very cheap - that DDR3 6GB pack costs about as much as a good DDR2 4GB pack.

£425.47 for the q9650 and x48 adn 4gb ram
£417.37 for the I7 setup;

i7 920
gigabyte x58 ud3
G.Skill 6GB 1333mhz

you might also need a cpu cooler depending on wheter or not you can mount your existing one with a backplate

still call if £30 extra to go I7 if you need a new cooler

It's cheaper to get the I7 and the I7 will perform better
