Currently got:-

i7 4770k delidded on water at a whopping 4.4Ghz (I know right, what an amazing CPU:o)
1080ti @ 2025/6000mhz gpu/mem (much better)
Asus Maximus IV Hero Z87 w/BIOS patch to boot from NVMe
16GB DD3 2600mhz
512GB M.2 SSD

Cooling capacity on my loop is 360 and 280 rad, so plenty.

Holding off for a Ryzen 3 as the CPU has served me...well...despite clocking like an old woman, but debating whether - if the time and money allows - to sell the 1080ti now while prices are ehhh and use what's in my 2nd PC i built for 'fun':-

i7 6700 non-K that does 4.6Ghz on water
Radeon Vega 56 that seems to do about 1900mhz core and definitely has Samsung HBM memory, so Vega 64 speeds
Asus Z170-M Plus w/hacked bios
16GB DDR4 2600mhz

This is up for sale and I will probably be able to get £600 for the whole thing - or I could keep it.
Selling the 1080ti would add ~£300-350?

Worth holding out for Ryzen 3 and 3080?

I game on a LG 34" 1440p panel; this box doesn't get used for much else outside of games, but if I ever have to make it do work due to my MacBook breaking, it would have to run macOS as I hate Windows with a thorough passion, and it would do a fair amount of video encoding.

If you hate windows why not use Linux or dual boot ?

Wait for Zen 3 and get a 3080 makes most sense, just gotta decide what to sell.

Could sell 2nd pc and the 1080ti buy a cheap gpu to cover till 3080 arrives.

I have to use Windows to game, I accept that. It's just if I had to if my laptop broke (it's happened) I like to have a Hackintosh to hand as a backup (that's what the 2nd PC was for). The rest of the time the whole thing is just there for gaming.

Would the 4770K @ 4.4Ghz bottleneck the 3080? I guess we won't know really until benchmarks come. I assumed the 4770K would bottleneck the 1080ti but it's been fine?

Depends on game and res. If your running 4k then its unlikely to bottleneck. Or if your running low core usage games it is unlikely to bottleneck

1080ti owner here aswell - if your happy to use the older card why not. I dont have a spare but also I dont think that the price will drop much further now anyway - potentially when the 3060 comes out as it looks to be on par with 1080ti/ 2080

I'm in similar boat with 4770k and 1080ti, waiting to see what Zen3 brings before I upgrade but I will need to upgrade as the 4770k is starting to show its age when it comes to music producing, if it was just for gaming alone I wouldn't bother as I'm happy with the performance at 1400p and have no intention of going 4k or that fussed about Raytracing

A newer and faster processor will help in building games where there are a lot of calculations but I guess it depends, what you play personally.

Same as yourself @Kinsy and @Minusorange
Looking to eventually replace my 4790k but personally I'd be looking to sell the GPU and get a 3080, especially if you can sell 1 PC and buy a single GPU with the proceeds.

Im replacing everything so I'll wait for ryzen first. I'm put off of 10900k now due to the heat and it performs near on par with the 9900k gaming wise. So I'll wait to see what ryzems new releases will be like.

My i74790 has performed very well for a long time though.

Going 4k puts the burden in most games on GPU though, And my 4770k now turned down to 4.1 which is 300mhz lower than stock 4790k still churns out 144-210fps at 4k in World of Tanks.

It totally depends on content and res the lower the worse but at 1080p in Diablo 3 i still get high fps sometimes 200 and my 2080ti is not far off a stock 3080. But 2020 is the last year for me Q1 2021 or xmas 2020 is where i change.

I game at 1440P Ultrawide and I upgraded my system last year from 4770k @4.4 that was paired with a 1080Ti to a 3700X, and consider it to be a worthwhile upgrade. Minimum frame rates and "smoothness" of games improved significantly. Having said that, with the next gen of CPUs on the horizon, i'ts worth hanging on to see how they perform, and if they arent much of an improvement over current gen, you will likely be able to grab a bargain as retailers clear stock anyway.

The 4770k is still going strong in my son's rig!

7700k here will also see what AMD brings. But also can't stop thinking about a cheapo 10600k system to tide me over until ddr5 arrives - prices seem to be coming down on the motherboards as no one is buying. I play a lot of Sims which like intel systems

I'm in the same boat mate, as are a lot of haswell users. My 4790k is running at 4.7ghz and it's been absoutely faultless - I will be keeping it though for an ITX build, funds permit.
My plan at the end of the month is to get a B550 board and 16gb RAM and try to source a cheap 3600 to keep me going until Zen3 is released.
I know people will say "it's a bad move at this time", but if I have the underlying infrastructre in place then it's just a hotswap of the CPU when stock is available.
Once I sell the 3600, I'd probably loose £20 or so in the relsale vaule - which I think is quite reasonable in all honesty.

You can tell this was a good chip, look at all us owners of 4770k and 4790K...more to the point 5 gens later we are only now really seeing a jump worth making....

Absolutely!

This is what stopped me upgrading when the 3x series dropped. 4790k has been flawless and only getting 65-80% usage in the games I play.

Shame GPUs aren't in the same boat.

Another 4790k user here, with a 1080ti both water cooled. Every now and again I get the upgrade itch, but then find reasons why not to bother.

I did a few tests last night to see how Modern Warefare is running. Im getting 140-150 fps at pretty much max settings on 1440p. CPU is at 85% so a bit left in the tank. System is silent though and temps maxed out for both CPU and GPU are at 50 deg. I would want to replicate that wth any new upgrade.

I think in the next few months (when there is stock) I will get a 3080. Ill prob finally put the 4790k out to pasture at the same time. Think she deserves a rest :D

may as well turn this thread into a 'All Haswell users. To upgrade or not to upgrade' :p

I too am on a 4770K/4.5Ghz @ 1.4v on water. Am thinking of upgrading too but not sure what to whether it would be Intel or AMD, and shift the 4770K to act as my VR rig paired with a 3080 (assuming most VR games are GPU bound.. i dunno. I don't game at anything higher than 1080p (since all my monitors are 1080p), so will be retaining the GTX1080 in my main rig
