Upgrading, an already upgraded rig...

Hey chaps,

My objective is the ability to game at 4K 144hz maintaining a 100-120 FPS minimum if possible. (Silky smooth frames, but not super high-end budget)

The challenge comes with the fact that my rig has been upgraded over and over since 2010, so I imagine I will be replacing the majority of components.

Current Specs:

MOBO/CPU: Asus Maximus VII Ranger - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
RAM: 4x8GB DDR3 PC3-10600 1333MHz 240-pin DIMM
PSU: Corsair RM Series RM 1000 '80+ Gold' 1000W
Disk: Seagate SSHD 7200RPM 3.5" 1TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache
Monitor: ******** NVISION LIFE 24" WIDESCREEN LED MONITOR
Case: Antec 300 Midi

New build:

Retaining the PSU/DISK, as I see no real upgrades there.

MOBO/CPU: AMD 3900X Bundle - AMD 3900X, Gigabyte X570 Gaming X, Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 32GB 3600MHz Bundle (12 Cores / 24 Threads))
GPU:GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER WINDFORCE OC 3X 8G 8192MB GDDR6 PCI-EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD
Monitor: ASUS ROG STRIX XG27UQ 27" 3840x2160 IPS 144Hz 1ms FreeSync/G-Sync Compatible HDR400 Widescreen Gaming

Comes in at £2,169.96‬, but I'm essentially getting a brand new PC, based on needing the main component upgrades.

Need a new AM4 slot cooling for the CPU as well, but not sure on this. They all look the same to me.

Main selection reason behind the Nvidia card, is the G-Sync. Seems to be worth the extra, instead of a cheaper but equally capable Radeon card.

Appreciate the advice.

Pretty much impossible to hit those frames on AAA games even with the rtx 2080ti.

My advice would be to drop down to 1440p which should work nicely with the 2070 super although with the new rtx 3000 series a couple of months away it maybe best to hold fire on the Gpu as the rtx3070 should be a 30% uplift at around the same price as the 2070.

Yikes ok.

So I'm well off the mark.

Whats actually realistic? 60? 50?

I saw a review were one fella managed a consistent 50-60 on a GTX 1070, so presume those upgrades would be fine.

I don't mind dropping to 1440p, but would pref a 4k monitor and have lower fps until I upgrade for future-proofing.

Many thanks,

You can do it on a 2080Ti, but not max settings. May as well wait for ampere.

Food for thought... do I just upgrade the CPU/Mobo, and monitor, using the GTX 1070 whilst I wait on the 3000 series?

Ok it wont be utilising the monitor very well, but will mean £500 not spent on an outdated GPU, with reasonable FPS in the meantime.

Probably the best bet, I know I'm holding off on pulling the trigger (have a 9700K @ 5gz and a 1080Ti (this is what I'm going to upgrade)) until, like the 2xxx series, the bugs are ironed out and the cards are "stable"
