I've always thought it a bit of a shame that people write of cars for the supposed image. If you like a car and find it fun / exciting to hell with what anyone else thinks I say.

I would love the CTR, but doesn’t really fit into our lifestyle & requirements.
Plus it would bring way too much (bad) attention around here.

We had a bad experience with Ford - ecoboost head gasket.
I wouldn’t want another.
I also wouldn’t want a new BMW or Mercedes Benz.
Each to their own, good job there are plenty of brands to choose from.

My list is not very big for the 11 years this month I've had my licence

2002 1.2 16v Renault Clio (Scrapped)
2003 2.0i Honda Accord Auto (Regrettably Scrapped)
2004 3.0i BMW Z4 (Sold)
2009 2.4i Honda Accord Manual (Current)
--------------------------------
Not my cars but do have access to drive on the daily
2017 0.9T Nissan Micra
2006 Bangernomics 2.0D Ford Focus C-Max (Which I'm confident has been remapped during its life, Something with the aerodynamics of a housebrick and only 130bhp shouldn't move as fast as thing does)

With the impending doom of the internal combustion engine nearing, and the fact that I'm currently full-time WFH with the likely hood when normality returns to the world that most of my working days will be from home, I'm fancying another big engine'd car (Yes I consider a 3L straight six to be a big engine) would love my first ever V8 before its too late.

Lashout's list is bonkers, including company cars that's 55 in 18 years so an average of 3 vehicles per year!

What I find interesting/surprising in this this thread is how many people have bought variants of the same car multiple times. What you might call 'incremental upgrades' rather than progressing up through bigger / faster / more expensive cars. I can see how that might happen over the long term i.e. you buy a car, really like it, run it for ages, then replace with a newer model of the same thing. My dad bought an Astra in '92, then '00, then '10 which he still runs today. But that's like 3 cars over 30 years, whereas some people are seemingly buying variants of the same thing on a much more frequent cadence.

Started around 1990 a couple of years after passing my test, before that I mainly borrowed from family members.

X reg 1.3S (yes the S was super important) Mini Metro - 1st car
D Reg Peugeot 309 1.3l
G Reg Sierra Sapphire 2.0
Mazda Xedos 6 2.0 I think
2002 Mazda 6, again 2.0
2008 BMW 520d M Sport (not sporty at all)
2016 BMW 330d X-Drive M Sport - currently in the garage being repaired after a head on with a deer.
2019 Hyundai i10 1.0 - hire car whilst my car is being repaired....oh the pain.

It is a shame they never got their Insignia based estate out in time. A few LHD examples made it out but we are talking only a handful. 330BHP 4x4 estate would have been something different to have between your typical German brands.

Now that is just stunning, and I generally dislike estate cars. What a tragedy these didn’t get to market properly.

As someone mentioned, it is interesting to see people’s lists and where they’ve run the same car multiple times.

@Lopéz - I’m particularly jealous of your run of Pug GTis and the MK2 Golf Gti. Arguably the best handling hatches of that generation, and I will now never know first hand :o

I've never really invested too much money in cars, mainly as my brother and I where so close he had all the hot hatches and then nicer stuff (currently running around in a TTRS), so I'd have a go in his cars and I'd buy more sensible things that didn't lose too much money where as he'd spend all his money on cars and tuning them..
Bikes feature a bit, I was fortunate that my Dad bought us a trials bike when I was very young, and no surprise I had a 125 when I was 17 (I skipped owning anything when I was 16 since I couldn't afford it!)

1977 - 1976 Yamaha TY80 (I was 6!, it was for me and my brother)
1978 - 1978 Yamaha TY175 (Brand new, shared with my brother)
1988 - 1985 Suzuki RG125 Gamma - F Reg - First vehicle, it was accident damaged (no front fairing)
1988 - 1978 Austin Mini Clubman - 1100 - S Reg (First actual 'car', total dog, the rear wheel fell off, but I loved it!)
1989 - 1989 Yamaha TZR125* - G Reg (Brand new)
1990 - 1985 Ford XR3i - B687 AGL (First hot-hatch, completely crap, got stolen then recovered, so slow it was embarassing)
1990 - 1990 Yahama DT125 (cheap example, needed loads of TLC)
1991 - 1985 Metro 1.3HL - Bxxx xxx (Stop Gap whilst saving money for a house, first time I fitted an engine myself!)
1993 - 1986 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia - Dxxx xxxx (cheaper alternative to the XR3i for a bit more comfort and cheaper insurance, the camshaft snapped in half)
1995 - 1990 Astra GTE 16v - G781 BMO (had this for 8 years, rebuilt the engine, remapped it myself, for 156-1650BHP it was quick for it's time)
1999 - 1997 Rover 420SD - R403SDL (commuter ****)
2000 - 1999 Suzuki GSXR600 WX - T477 KAM (First actual legal street bike)* Only passed my test at this point (Direct Access)
2001 - 1998 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 Sri (The Mrs commuter ****)
2001 - 2001 Suzuki GSXR600 Y - Y67 AAM (Brand new)
2002 - 1999 Vauxhall Vectra CDX 2.0 DTI (commuter ****)
2003 - 2003 Suzuki GSXR100K3 - FY03 USC (3 months old)
2005 - 2005 Vauxhall Zafira 1.9CDTi SRi DN55 FZE (Brand new - family wagon, I'd massively hurt my back and needed something easy to get in/out and carry 2 kids etc, I still spec'd it with adaptive suspension and had the official 888 Remap to 200BHP)
2009 - 2003 Fiat Stylo Dynamic 1.9 JTD WV53 KHZ (commuter ****)
2014 - 2014 Mazda CX-5 2.2AWD Sport Nav HF14 GAX (3 months old - family wagon replacement)
2014 - 2003 VW Beetle Convertible GJ53 TVA (for the Mrs - She always wanted one, so I took the family wagon on)
[C]2015 - 2004 BMW E46 M3 Convertible (Still have this - effectively we swapped, I had the convertible, the Mrs got the Family wagon)
2015 - 2011 Mini Countryman 1.6 Cooper HK11 VLE(Smaller family wagon for the Mrs)
2017 - 2015 Nissan X-Trail 1.6D AWD Tekna (Replacement family wagon for more space)
[C]2019 - 2016 BMW X3 x35d M-Sport (Managed to win the options lottery)
[C]2021 - 2006 VW Beetle Cabriolet 1.6 Luna (Just bought it on the weekend for the daughter to learn in)

Other cars
2004 - 1999 Focus Zetec 1.6 - Ex company car bought through my brother, had it 3 months just to flip for some money and see if we preferred it over the 1.8 Astra SRi but the Mrs didn't like it
1992 - 1986 MG Metro - Bought for £50, just needed to last 3 weeks, it used about 4L of oil in those 3 weeks, then sold it to the scrapper for £40

Next Cars
Mrs - Wants another Mini Countryman, would just want a 1.5 Petrol Auto - I keep looking at the PHEV (She does lots of very short commutes, ~1.5miles) or the JCW 306 BHP, but she's now sold on decent automatics and can't blame her.. Her current X3 35d she likes, but does not need anything as quick..
Me - No idea, would like maybe a convertible 435d / 435i / 440i/ M235i / M240i but keep thinking a BMW i3 as a quirky cheap to use second car, basically I do < 2K miles per year, mainly weekends taking the family or Mrs out for a day in the Cotswolds etc.. I walk to work when I can and so any car I have is just sat on the drive most of the time!

I've been driving since 1992 and my list is VERY short! I do tend to keep my cars a while...

Ford Sierra 1.8L (given to me by my Dad)
Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 GLI
Ford Escort 1.4 (was my now wifes car. We decided to sell the Cavalier as we didn't need two cars and it was the oldest of the two. Wish I'd kept it as the Escort was horrible!)
Toyota Corolla 1.4 (given to us by my father in law before he moved to Spain. An improvement over the Escort)
Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 vvti Design (More like my kind of car. Roomy and a big boot)
Audi A6 2.0 TDI Black Edition (Had this just over two weeks. Purchased with money from my Dads estate and I'm loving it.)

IIRC since 1995 -

F-Reg Ford Escort Mk4
P-Reg Ford Escort Mk6
T-Reg Ford Mondeo ST24
R-Reg Nissan Skyline R34GTT
L-Reg Citroen ZX (2nd car alongside R34GTT during long term engine swap)
F-Reg Citroen BX (2nd car alongside R34GTT during long term engine swap)
P-Reg Peugeot 406
M-Reg BMW 740i
56-Reg Ford Mondeo Mk3
03-Reg Audi RS6
???-Reg Citroen C5
???-Reg Ford Mondeo Mk4
58-Reg Audi RS6

The R34 was my favourite car out of everything I've had so far, more for the "once in a life time" experiences it opened up TBH, but a very close seconds is my beloved "L334KKY" Citroen ZX which gave me so many funny stories and yet, despite being flawed beyond belief (and probably a death trap) it never failed in a non-humorous way in the 10-ish months I had it plus it handled B-Roads like a lunatic, tripod-ing every corner anywhere! :D

08-Reg Peugeot 308 1.6L
57-Reg Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDi VRS
12-Reg VW Scirocco 2.0 TDi
09-Reg Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDi VRS
14-Reg Audi S4
18-Plate Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDi VRS

Currently driving a BMW 640D which is the best all round car I've had, not as fun of the S4 but I don't have to stop at fuel stations half as much! I also have a P-Reg BMW 840 tucked up in the garage too.

The 205 GTI and the Mk2 Golf GTI are both great fun, but they're really really different cars to drive.
