Ho-kay, I understand the difference between the quality settings on my canon video camera, but I'm curious which setting most people use?

    SP: 7mbps (1480 x 1080)
    XP+: 12mbps (1480 x 1080)
    FXP: 17mbps (1920 x 1080)

If we were talking still images, I'm raw all the way and would take no less... but with video FXP would eat up memory cards and HDD space like there is no tomorrow and I'm not sure yet if the increase in quality is that noticeable... what do people reckon? Definitely worth spending more on memory cards and potentially a new external hdd for storage for the FXP setting?

Yes record full res then cut it down later on.

    I record @

    1440*[email protected] 25mbps (1.33 PAR)
    1920*[email protected] 16mbps (1:1 PAR)

Then put all the uncompressed footage on to Bluray discs when I have finished the project.

Out of interest, could it be the case with more budget cameras that the difference is not as noticable?

    personally, i can't really see a difference between 7 and 17mbps

and strangely, although my 8gb memory can supposedly do about twice as much video in SP than FXP, the source files dont take up anything like double on similar videos, more like 35% more

EDIT: also, are widescreen tellies 1440 or 1920 x 1080? obviously you want the same so no letterboxing yeah?

I can see the difference in mine but there is big price difference between the cameras.

Memory cards are cheap so I would just buy some new ones.

    1920x1080 is widescreen (16:9), 1440x1080 is 4:3.

Also will depends on the PAR. My HDV records in 1440*1080 but the PAR is 1.33 and when its converted to 1 its 1920*1080

oh, well that answers the question anyway then, certainly don't want 4:3 footage in this day and age do I :)

I've just bought another 16gb, but class 6 cards aren't super cheap but not too bad I spose... 41 quid...

    EDIT:

    ahh.

not so cut and dry then... at the moment, I can't see a solid reason for cutting my recording capacity in half for the sake of FXP, quality wise there's nothing in it but this resolution thing might be the deciding factor if I can get to the bottom of it...
