The vast majority get the full speed (assuming whatever you're connecting to can serve it at that speed) so would be worth speaking to them or post your cable modem stats here and/or on the VM forums as it will either be something your end (ie. your machine/network), their modem or local congestion on their network.

I'll give them a call and try and get some money off.

Do a speed test via the on network speed test server, if it’s OK then move to a few off network servers, combine this with a BQM plot over a few days and you should have a more informed picture of what is going on, unless you literally just want to reduce your bill, then probably best not to waste time asking for help resolving the issue.

+1. Also check that your wired devices (you *are* testing wired, right?) are negotiated at 1Gb not 100Mbps at the switch/router.

My question is: Have Virgin Media improved or are they still the same as before?
I had Virgin (NTL) back in 2006-7, signed up again last year. Their customer service hasn't improved, utterly terrible you have to go through loads of menus on the phone, explain things about 5 times, sometimes you get cut off by them randomly etc. They messed up my initial setup and it took a while to get sorted, they also added a charge for a service I added that was supposed to be free, without telling me etc. Honestly one of the worst companies I've ever had the misfortune to deal with from a support perspective, and I include BT (who can be pretty naff at times) in that.

As for service itself, speeds are brilliant but there is a lot of jitter so not great for gaming. Also seems less reliable than FTTC, goes down a fair bit.

As already said. It's area dependant.

I've been with virgin about 6 years and it's been great. Unfortunately I can't get 1gig but I've always had the top package for my area (m500 now)

Yes, sorry if it was ready mentioned, I could not find it. I will probably go ahead with the highest package and see how it goes. I'll post here how it goes although I'm not moving until mid June.

Order the service, if it doesn't perform well you have 14 days to cancel

When taking out the service you can be completely upfront and ask the Virgin Rep. about cancellation if you're not happy with the service, all the calls are recorded.

Thanks, this helped me made my mind, I can always retrace if I'm completely unhappy OR I could always downgrade to lower speed. If I really wanted to push it I could start at 1ggb, downgrade before the 14 days and, if I find the difference is massive, go back to the 1gb, they will not be happy but I will not care and it could be an option.

Anybody else had Virgin BB and phone down in London area since Friday morning?..It has only just got back up at 10am today, guess I should cancel the engineer I booked for today between 12-4pm, hoping it stays up now, logged into my account and they said there was an issue in my area which should be fixed by 4pm today, guess they got it fixed early.

I hope this is not a regular thing with Virgin, been with them since March, had two days down due to fibre cables ripped by Electricity board and now this 30 hour outage.


Update: My account now states no known issues, they must have fixed it.

Seen about 400mbit for a split second but haven't seen anything more than a final speedtest run of aorund 340Mbit. (Virgin Media 500mbit)

I tried downloading RDR2 and getting between 30 and 60MB/s, seems like average maybe around 50MB/s

No. Everything looks in spec on your downstream, but you say laptop and phone? Both WiFi? In which case you're not testing your Internet speed you're testing your wireless network speeds on a per-device basis. The variability you descrive is typical of WiFi, and 50-60 MB/sec is actually decent for WiFi, especially 'ac'. Plug in a device with a wired connection, and test again. If the testing was done (wired) on the Ryzen rig, then it may suggest something else and a TBB monitor would help.

ANyone else get the email saying Virgin are removing Usenet access from June 30th?

I am presuming they mean the virgin usenet servers are going down and they aren't trying to remove access to usenet completely?

Yeah, just got that email. I suppose now is an appropriate time for those in the know to nominate suitable free alternatives, hint hint :)
