Hmm I would count ring replacement as an engine rebuild, it does afterall involve complete stripping down of the engine.

I would have to agree, but tis still a good figure for an earlier engine.

Looks like the general concensus is to keep it then :)

Lovely car Malt! I see you've still not got the suspension fitted?

Yer, i know. I not sure im going to ever get it done, 190k shocks and lowering springs is not a great idea im told :( Maybe if i can be bothered to get new shocks fitted sometime in the near future they will go on.

out of interest malt, were did you get the new backbox from?

Fooled you :p Its a couple of bolt on exhaust tips! I spent about a month trying to find a couple of single bolt ons that didnt look terrible and would fit well enough not to look bolted on.

Backboxes for this car are one of two things, if not both. Very expensive/ Very hard to find.

Thanks :D

Egay has lots, none of which can be used on my car, due to them only having a single entry point :(

There are plenty of cheapo ones about, its just often a pain in the bum to fit them. However, with an escort, there are probably made to fit ones readily available. They might cost more, but are likely to be a much better fit.

Just rolled past 281,000 on my way to leicester yesterday. '95 Mondeo 1.8 ex taxi. :)

Unfortunately doesn't look as nice as your beemer, the aubergine paintwork is full of little scratches and the boot lid has been replaced with one which is a nasty shade of blue.

Apologies for dragging this back to the top.....
Malt, someone has just offered me a PX against the drag car...which just happens to be a car not much different to yours
Are there any decent resources for the 5 series, anything to look out for etc etc? And as a rough guide - how much do you think yours was worth...before the engine started playing up!
Cheers :)

800-1000 really, only because of the alloys/skirts/chip :)

Basically they are very tough cars. Some would say the msot solid cars ever made by BMW.

Look for dead instrument panels, pixels, and error codes.

Coolant systems can be touchy, the early waterpumps on the M50 engine had plastic impellers, these can break and free-wheel causing overheating. Look for leaks.

Engines are normally rock solid if looked after, oh and dead cats will cost ya a fortune if you get real ones!

Bout all i can think about at the moment. :)
