no, I have a 5770 and am getting a 470 over a 5850 despite costing me an extra £80 because I'm going to WC it, and 4xx have far larger increase in performance per extra MHz than 58xx.

a 770MHz 470 or 480 will wipe the floor with any 5870, and they're far better when it comes to minimum fps anyway

Did you actually read the link below:

http://www.techspot.com/review/283-geforce-gtx-400-vs-radeon-hd-5800/

Wouldn't say its far better at minimum FPS when the majority of the difference is one or two FPS with generally the 5850 coming out better.

Put on top of that the 5850 will clock much futher..

However I go off topic and that is your choice, my personal recommendation to the OP though would be the 5850

If they were both the same price it would be a very tough to splite them. As they are not the same price the decision for most people is easy.

Get the 5850.

May be you should have a look at this, particularly for the 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF results:

While majority games the 5850 is faster than GTX470, but there are games which GTX470 get higher minimum frame rate than 5850...and even 5870 in 4xAA mode. This is not to say the GTX470 is better, but more to the point of 5850/5870 get hit much harder on the minimum frame rate in some games when AA is applied. A few frame rate difference in minimum might sound like not a big deal, but if the frame rate is at above vs below 25fps, that's the difference of smooth vs not smooth already.

With that said, 5850 is still clearly a better buy than the GTX470, simply because of the nvidia cards are being priced way too high. If the GTX470/480 were priced at compariable level to 5850/5870, pretty sure it would be more attractive and people would buy them even if they do suck more power and run hotter.

I'm surprised at the discussion. Unless one dabbles in cuda or has a 120 Hz monitor, the 5850 is the better buy hands down. Considering the price difference, comparing them directly is silly.

If 5850 was still priced at £200~£220 like when at launch, then the decision is obviously very clearly leening toward it. But now with the average 5850 that are in stock priced at average £240~£250 and with non-reference PCB that can't mod voltage (in another word people that are buying 5850 now are actually paying more for less), can't really be surprised that got people thinking about the GTX470 too. One thing to my surprise was I just googled GTX470, and there are actually places selling the GTX470 range from £244 to £270...

Very nice so in the end went for a more overpriced not worth it in relation to performance option than the gtx470. Should have gone 5870 at that price but then again each to there own I guess.:)
