I've never heard a headphone that sounds like a HD650, the Auteur gets close but even then it just misses the mark with having the same sense of timbre. The Mrspeakers Aeon open maybe? nice sounding, similar character but even warmer, lusher. For under a grand forget it, the HD650 is a league of it's own with the right gear behind it.

The AKG K371 is okay sounding, a bit rough in the upper mids similar to the HD650 but it doesn't have a boosted mid bass so it's more noticeable. I do find it a bit lean sounding, not the most enjoyable headphone on the planet but it's decent enough to recommend. Problem with peaks is if someone is new to headphones it's the last thing you'll hear. People are more likely to hear mid bass bloom and warmth as a negative rather than peaks. Something like the DT770 will sound super clean as a first headphone so I'd be surprised if anyone new would hear them as harsh. Some people are super sensitive to different areas too, I tend to find peaks at 1k and 6k extremely bothersome, I find it really affects the timbre of a headphone. 2K can also be problematic but If there's a mid bass emphasis I rarely notice it. I find the 770 can come in a few flavors due to driver variation, the majority will probably end up with warm, v shaped, treble spikes, I've see a few just pure bright, like a 990 with 880 bass. Bear in mind they don't driver match(880 does despite being the same driver as the 770 and 990) so there's some differences between the left and right driver in some units.

The DT150 is a weird phone as it doesn't really sound like it's from the same family, it's really enjoyable.

All comes down to personal taste really, i have tried many headphones so the ones i like is the beyer dt48 but lacks bass as well as hp 151.

@Space Monkey if your headphone journey does not stop with the dt 150's give the sound magic hp 151 a go please :).

Reasons are is that is has nice deep bass while being a sensible fun headphones that maybe won't make you go yuck.

The hp 151 are one of my favorite headphones.
